Glenn Greenwald says the message sent by the detainment of his partner at H=
eathrow airport is clear: "if we continue to report on what the NSA and [UK=
surveillance agency] GCHQ are doing, they will continue to target us for a=
ll sorts of retribution."
This kind of government retaliation clearly poses a dangerous threat to the=
very notion of a free press. But there's another threat to independent jou=
rnalism.
Real investigative reporting takes time and resources - in other words, it =
requires money. Corporate sponsors and advertisers can't be trusted to fund=
it without wanting to exercise editorial control or influence.
