t r u t h o u t | I recently returned from two weeks at Guantanamo Bay, covering the military commission hearings of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri (suspected mastermind of the 2000 USS Cole bombing) and of the alleged 9/11 plotters, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
While there, I saw how military commissions are nothing more than kangaroo courts, in which the rights of the accused are diminished and power is tilted in favor of the prosecution and government. I saw the cages of Camp X-Ray, now rotting and covered in weeds, but required by law to remain standing as evidence of potential human rights abuses.
In this age of austerity and corporate consolidation of media, doing independent journalism is increasingly difficult. Many journalists have to resort to living on next to nothing in order to report the truth.
Fortunately, there are a few media outlets who support independent journalists. Truthout is one of them. If Truthout hadn't supported me, I wouldn't have been able to report the foul truths about Guantanamo.
