t r u t h o u t | "We allow our ignorance to prevail upon us and make us th=
ink we can survive alone, alone in patches, alone in groups, alone in races=
, and even alone in genders."
=E2=80=95 Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou's quote reminds me of the many things we learned in the last w=
eek. On the downside, the Supreme Court killed crucial parts of the Voting =
Rights Act and states in the South immediately enacted racial voting laws, =
reminding us that we are still far from erasing bigotry.
The very next day, our spirits were revived when we saw the same court stri=
ke down the federal laws that treated same-sex married couples differently.=
The joyous celebrations were tempered with the realization that there is a=
still a long march to go.
But it will take the will to not try to survive alone - for all of us, with=
all our different identities, to march and work together.
Truthout has a unique set of news analysts and opinion writers who explain =
and push for a world that matches Maya Angelou's hope that we go beyond our=
ignorance. Armed with wisdom and facts, they show how change cannot be mad=
e just for some of us if we want the change to be permanent.
To keep a place for these wise writers at Truthout, we must raise over $23,=
000 in the next few days. Will you help us show the world how to survive by=
standing together? Please give today!
