.
Whether it's traveling to warzones, standing on the "wrong" side of police =
lines during protests, digging up dirt about corporate crimes or even writi=
ng a column that the people in power don't like, real journalists regularly=
stick their neck out without much chance of reward.
They continue to be targeted all over the world, even in their home countri=
es. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, over one hundred jou=
rnalists were killed last year, at least 70 of them as a direct result of t=
heir profession.
It's also become clear that the American government isn't above spying on r=
eporters, persecuting their sources and criminalizing acts of journalism. S=
o now more than ever, our world needs independent journalists who aren't af=
raid to go against the grain - even when the public might not want to hear =
what they've uncovered.
