When foreclosed homeowners rallied outside the Justice Department in D.C. e=
arlier this month, to demand that Wall Street bankers who caused the forecl=
osure crisis be held accountable, officers from the Department of Homeland =
Security sprang into action - to taser and arrest protesters.
Consider the jail time served for civil disobedience by environmental justi=
ce and anti-war activists, in contrast to the lifestyle enjoyed by the call=
ous people who crashed the financial system, led us into illegal wars and c=
ontinue to trash the planet. Or consider the number of African-American and=
Latino men and women swept into the prison system by the war on drugs, oft=
en simply for being the wrong color in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Truthout is one of the only news outlets that consistently covers these iss=
ues. We publish reporting and analysis that exposes the reality of our just=
ice system - from the surveillance of peaceful protesters to the harm cause=
