The Temper of Heroic Hearts

t r u t h o u t | I don't know about you, but I'm a fair chunk of time removed from those heady days of youth when I didn't have much beyond a ponytail and a dream.
The crackling energy I enjoyed back then, the stuff that made me feel as if lightning could leap from my fingers, has been slowly but surely replaced by the temper of experience, the depth of duty, and the leavening influence of earned wisdom. Dwelling on this, some lines from Tennyson came to mind:
"We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
For me, the meaning of those lines is simple: What we do with the intervening years between our becoming and our departure gives name to our character. If we do it right, it has a direct effect on those around us.
At Truthout, we strive, we seek, we find, and we will not yield. Our goals are lofty, but we need funding to achieve them.
