t r u t h o u t | I began reading Truthout shortly after its founding - in the tumultuous year after the 2000 election, when it became almost impossible to find out what was really happening via the news. I vividly remember my own frustration. I turned to the internet and to independent media to try to make sense of the conflicting messages being spun by campaigns and pundits.
Mainstream election coverage in 2012 followed a similar path, in which sensational sound bites reigned and falsehoods were presented as one candidate's valid opinion. As Truthout's managing editor, I'm proud to say that Truthout provided a bright spot - digging deeper into issues, exposing false claims and investigating the real issues that impact our nation and the world.
