t r u t h o u t | What's in a subtitle? In the case of Mike Lofgren's new book, "The Party Is Over," the answer is the last few decades of American history encapsulated: "How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted."
We're extremely proud to be offering "The Party Is Over" as a Truthout Progressive Pick, for two reasons. Firstly, because the genesis of Logren's book was "Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult," an essay he wrote for Truthout in 2011, which became our most popular story of the year. And secondly, because Lofgren's thesis is more relevant than ever at a time when the media is swamped by what amounts to ongoing advertising campaigns by both major political parties: parties that Lofgren sees as having become highly dysfunctional.
Joan Walsh sounds a strikingly similar note in "What's The Matter With White People" when she observes, "One party, my own, has lost its spine, the other lost its mind." Meanwhile, Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco's new book of graphic reportage shows the devastating consequences of bipartisan contempt for the poor and working families of America.

"Unless we know this history, we will have little understanding of how far we have come, how we got here and what still needs to change to make America (and the rest of the world) more livable, humane and democratic."
