t r u t h o u t | We don't often feature rock albums as Progressive Picks. But then, there aren't many rock stars like Tom Morello, a.k.a. The Nightwatchman.

Known first as the guitarist in Rage Against The Machine, Morello is also a social activist, a massive supporter of Occupy Wall Street and other protest movements (performing live at both Zuccotti Park in New York and the NATO protests in Chicago), and co-founder of the nonprofit Axis of Justice. In a recent interview with Truthout's Jason Leopold, Morello declared "I don't believe that the Democratic party has anything to do with the Left," as well as his belief in the innocence of the so-called NATO3, who face terrorism charges.

These are ideas that make the mainstream media uncomfortable: Just like Michelle Alexander's insights into our racist criminal justice system, or the lifelong work of Howard Zinn. But all these ideas are available for you to digest through Truthout's Progressive Picks program.

Order one of our recent Progressive Picks by clicking the title and making the minimum donation to Truthout:

World Wide Rebel Songs By The Nightwatchman
https://members.truth-out.org/bgift93-gift/choose-type-donation
"Troubled times call out for troubled songs," says Tom Morello about his new album. While previous Nightwatchman records have been acoustic, "World Wide Rebel Songs" is supported by a full electric backing band called the Freedom Fighting Orchestra. Morello says of the album, "I wanted to capture a vibe midway between Johnny Cash and Che Guevara, murder ballads and Molotov anthems."

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness By Michelle Alexander https://members.truth-out.org/bgift92-gift/choose-type-donation
Already highly acclaimed and influential, Michelle Alexander's treatise on the American criminal justice system as an institutionalized form of racial oppression is now available in paperback. Publisher's Weekly says: "Legal scholar Alexander argues vigorously and persuasively that we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it. Jim Crow and legal racial segregation has been replaced by mass incarceration as a system of social control."

The Historic Unfulfilled Promise By Howard Zinn
https://members.truth-out.org/bgift91-gift/choose-type-donation
"You're in for a real treat," says Matthew Rothschild, Editor-in-Chief of The Progressive, in his introduction to this collection of Howard Zinn's work for that magazine. "Trained as a historian, Zinn had a unique ability to take the long view on social change. He would notice the fragility of governments and the possibility of breakthroughs when most of the rest of us would come down with a bad case of pessimism, or even resignation. That's one of the things that makes him so inspiring."

We hope you're inspired by the ideas offered by our Progressive Picks.

Sincerely,
The Truthout Team
