would rather keep secret, there are few reporters as dogged as Jason Leopol=
d, lead investigative reporter at Truthout.
Last week, Leopold and Jeff Kaye obtained a Department of Defense report on=
the use of "mind altering drugs" during the interrogation of detainees in =
Guantanamo, Iraq and Afghanistan [ #1 ]. Major news organizations across th=
e globe, from the Associated Press to Wired, recognized the significance of=
this release, as did human rights groups. Physicians for Human Rights said=
the report "contains the first explicit admission by the US government tha=
t these types of drugs were used on detainees against their will" and credi=
ts Truthout for pressing for nearly two years to get the document declassif=
ied. And attorneys representing prisoners on habeas corpus cases say they p=
lan to use the report to argue their cases.
Then just this week, the FBI, in response to a lawsuit in which Jason Leopo=
ld is a co-plaintiff, said the bureau would now begin to abide by a law tha=
t requires all government agencies, when asked, to provide estimated dates =
of completion to requesters of documents under the Freedom of Information A=
ct (FOIA) [ #2 ]. The ACLU of Massachusetts said this story "tells us somet=
hing very interesting about the FOIA process."
This work doesn't just benefit our readers and the individuals directly aff=
