A "Victory" in My FOIA Lawsuit Against the FBI
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10400-a-victory-in-my-foia-lawsuit-against-the-fbi
Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Nearly four years after changes to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) went into effect, the FBI, in response to a lawsuit in which I am a co-plaintiff, said the bureau would now begin to abide by a little-known provision in the law that requires all government agencies, when asked, to provide estimated dates of completion to records requesters. Last February ... National Security Counselors and I sued the FBI and other government agencies for refusing to provide us with estimated dates of completion on our FOIA requests."
The Unhappy Truth About Positive Psychology
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10382-the-unhappy-truth-about-positive-psychology
Jeffrey B. Rubin, Truthout: "I am not a gloomy person, but I don't spend a single minute working at being happy. Nonetheless, I understand the impulse, which has become a national obsession, the central topic in a plethora of best-selling books, the darling of big business and the media and a boon for motivational speakers and self-help entrepreneurs. In a world as complicated and disheartening as ours, who wouldn't want to have a method for feeling better?"
FDA Makes It Official: BPA Can't Be Used in Baby Bottles and Cups
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10407-fda-makes-it-official-bpa-cant-be-used-in-baby-bottles-and-cups
Sabrina Tavernise, The New York Times News Service: "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Tuesday that baby bottles and children's drinking cups could no longer contain bisphenol A, or BPA, an estrogen-mimicking industrial chemical used in some plastic bottles and food packaging.... But the new prohibition does not apply more broadly to the use of BPA in other containers, said an FDA spokesman, Steven Immergut. He said the decision did not amount to a reversal of the agency's position on the chemical."
Obama Says Romney Is Hiding Something in Tax Returns
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10403-obama-says-romney-is-hiding-something-in-tax-returns
David Lightman and Lesley Clark, McClatchy Newspapers: "Obama and his allies escalated their attacks on rival Mitt Romney for refusing to release more of his tax returns, suggesting that secrets in those files cost him the vice presidency four years ago and could embarrass him today.... Obama's new 30-second ad questioned whether Romney paid his 'fair share of taxes,' though it offered no proof for the assertion. Campaign officials Tuesday defended the ad, saying the full story behind Romney's investments won't be known until his tax records are released."
For Barney Frank's Legacy: Pass the Mulvaney Amendment to Freeze Military Spending
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10412-for-barney-franks-legacy-pass-the-mulvaney-amendment
Robert Naiman, Truthout: "Frank is retiring from the House this year after thirty-two years of service ... I think there is a strong case that in the cause of working to rein in America's excessive, unnecessary, out-of-control military spending, Frank has stood out from his colleagues, both in terms of advancing the issue in public debate, and in terms of reaching across the aisle to form bipartisan coalitions to push in the direction of sanity."
How Big Business Has Triumphed in State Legislatures on Civil Liberties, Higher Education and Energy
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10316-how-big-business-has-trumped-the-peoples-will-in-state-legislatures-on-civil-liberties-higher-education-and-energy-policy
Steve Horn and Sarah Blaskey, Truthout: "Assaults on civil liberties, public higher education and the ecosystem have been initiated in statehouses nationwide over the past decade. In these various policy spheres, the corporate agenda has trumped a people-centric agenda. What's the thread that ties it all together? And how did extreme policies become normalized in the states? Over the past year, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has received the lion's share of coverage for its documented role in advancing the corporate agenda in statehouses nationwide."
In New York Bookstore Contract Fight, Occupy Helped Workers Draw Energy, Media Spotlight
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10391-in-new-york-bookstore-contract-fight-occupy-helped-workers-draw-energy-media-spotlight
Diane Krauthamer, Truthout: "When the union contract at Strand Bookstore expired last summer, the workers did not anticipate spending ten months engaged in a dispute that would fundamentally strengthen their voice on the job and draw the support of labor activists throughout New York City.... In this time, Strand workers engaged in a battle that fundamentally altered their relationship with management and the union - building shop floor power beyond the scope of what a good contract could offer."
Bill Moyers | Financial Expert Sheila Bair on Keeping Banks Honest
http://truth-out.org/opinion/item/10408-bill-moyers-financial-expert-sheila-bair-on-keeping-banks-honest
Bill Moyers, Moyers & Company: "Bill talks with financial expert Sheila Bair about the lawlessness of our banking system and the prognosis for meaningful reform.... 'I worry that the public is getting cynical,' Bair tells Moyers ... 'And the public loses interest - they become cynical about if the regulators in Washington can fix any of this, and they don't exert counter political pressure to get meaningful reforms in place.'"
On the News With Thom Hartmann: Walmart Heirs Have More Wealth Than 41 Percent of American Families - Combined, and More
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10418-on-the-news-with-thom-hartmann-consumer-financial-protection-bureau-marketing-tactics-and-more
In today's On the News segment: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau slapped Capital One bank with a $210 million fine today for using "deceptive marketing tactics" to lure customers into buying unnecessary financial products like payment protection and credit monitoring, the six Walton heirs have more wealth than 41 percent of all American families - combined, oil drilling in the Arctic is set to begin in the next three weeks, and more.
Eighteen Prominent Republicans Who Want Romney to Release More Tax Returns Right Now
http://truth-out.org/news/item/10415-eighteen-prominent-republicans-who-want-romney-to-release-more-tax-returns-right-now
Annie-Rose Strasser, ThinkProgress: "Mitt Romney continues to resist pressure to turn over more tax returns. In an interview today he said he is 'simply not enthusiastic about giving them hundreds or thousands of more pages to pick through, distort, and lie about.' The call for more information about Romney's financial past, however, is bipartisan. A poll released today found fifty-six percent of all voters, including sixty one percent of independents, think that Romney should release twelve years of returns."
