t r u t h o u t | There are a few dirty and destructive consequences of the massive money race that comes around every four years. Of course there's the corruption - that's the first one we all think of these days, as *the Koch Brothers are set to spend more campaign money in 2012 than Sen. John McCain's entire campaign did in 2008*.
But some of the other consequences are more subtle. Anyone involved in nonprofit work that touches the political world knows that when the major parties turn on their fundraising machines - the largest, most advanced fundraising operations in human history - they suck the oxygen out of the room for smaller organizations. You've probably experienced this. If you've ever given money to anyone affiliated with a major political party, chances are you've received quite a few phone calls and emails asking for you to do it again.
*In a system where campaign professionals themselves estimate that 80 percent of campaign spending is wasted**, where fewer than one in five citizens approves of the job Congress is doing and where the noxious stench of campaign money can be smelled from overseas, we also need to invest time and money in breaking this relationship between money and politics.
