t r u t h o u t | "When I was young, I thought money was the most important thing in life," said Oscar Wilde. "Now that I am old, I know that it is." Mr. Wilde was not wrong in his assessment; in 21st century America, money has become the bloody lubrication for the gears of empire, mass media manipulation and the steady erasure of basic American rights. To put it more bluntly, as Bob Dylan did, "Money doesn't talk, it swears."
The swearing was heard loudest in Wisconsin last week, when a coalition of unions, working people and progressive activists were swept from the board by a tidal wave of outside money. This was the first shot fired in what promises to be a long, grueling national campaign between a small cadre of obscenely wealthy power-brokers and the rest of us, who only want our rights restored and our nation healed. The Citizens United decision did more than unleash these greedy dogs of war; it has sounded the death knell for participatory democracy as we have known it ... but only if we allow it.
We at Truthout mean to tame these dogs, but can only do so with your help. One day, one dollar, one drop of truth at a time, we can join together and do our part to reverse the damage that has been done, and begin the long labor required to set things to rights.
