t r u t h o u t | *Here's something I never thought I would see:* Jason Leopold and National Security Counselors v. Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of Justice, Department of the Treasury, National Archives and Records Administration, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
In Feburary I filed a lawsuit, with the pro bono help of a public interest law firm, against the government agencies listed above for violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Over the past year, FOIA has become the most important weapon in my reporting arsenal, notwithstanding the government's continuing attempts to conceal the documents I seek.
If we prevail in court, everyone who uses FOIA as a means of documenting government actions will benefit. Afterall, it's Truthout's mission "to reveal systemic injustice and offer transformative ideas to strengthen democracy".

I was the first news reporter to file a FOIA request with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for documents that would shed light on whether the agency had been monitoring the Occupy Wall Street protest movement. Last month, I received the first batch of records from DHS: 400 pages that proved OWS was of great interest not only to DHS but to the Secret Service. Truthout was the first news agency to publish a series of reports on the Occupy documents, and even the Associated Press took notice of our reporting efforts.
