t r u t h o u t | One month ago today, 1,000 people took over a corporate-owned park in the heart of lower Manhattan with a clear message: we're against the corporate takeover of the international economy; we're for social justice and we want to develop a different vision for the world. Many in the media laughed at them. Even more news outlets simply ignored them. But Truthout covered these new protests from the beginning, because we could actually understand their significance. One month in, this movement is growing every second, and Truthout is keeping pace, reporting on these exciting new currents and the forces driving them. We're free to do this because we are beholden only to our readers, not to advertisers or shareholders.

Help us continue to bring you and the world the truth of what's happening at Occupy Wall Street and the satellite protests around the globe.

Chris Hedges | A Movement Too Big to Fail
http://www.truth-out.org/movement-too-big-fail/1318858329
Chris Hedges, Truthdig: "The Occupy Wall Street movement, like all radical movements, has obliterated the narrow political parameters. It proposes something new. It will not make concessions with corrupt systems of corporate power. It holds fast to moral imperatives regardless of the cost. It confronts authority out of a sense of responsibility. It is not interested in formal positions of power. It is not seeking office."

Terms of the Occupation
http://www.truth-out.org/TermsoftheOccupation/1318881328
J.A. Myerson, Truthout: "As a birthday present to the movement, I'd like to invite its adherents to acknowledge the appeal of three terms whose utterances, I have noticed, are almost always accompanied by caveats. Let us consider these terms so that we might not be afraid to use them openly, smartly and with candor."

Tom Hayden | UN Torture Report Stirs Pressure for Congressional Response
http://www.truth-out.org/un-torture-report-stirs-pressure-congressional-response/1318873323
Tom Hayden, The Nation: "The UN report, described in a lead New York Times story on October 10, is triggering calls once again for enforcement of the so-called Leahy Law, passed in the 1990s, which prohibits any US funding, weapons or training to security force units in other countries committing gross human rights violations. A loophole in the Leahy Law, however, allows Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to waive the ban by issuing a finding that the Afghan government is taking remedial measures.... No one in Congress has introduced language to expose and defund US assistance to human rights violators like the Afghan security forces, but the time may be approaching."

California Prison Hunger Strike Ends, Conditions of "Immense Torture" Continue
http://www.truth-out.org/california-prison-hunger-strike-ends-conditions-immense-torture-continue/1318874282
Victoria Law, Truthout: "Imagine a concrete room no more than eight by ten feet. It has no windows, only a perforated steel door facing a solid concrete wall. Fluorescent lights stay on 24 hours a day. Now imagine being locked in that room."

On the News With Thom Hartmann: GOP Frontrunner Cain Admits His 9-9-9 Plan Would Raise Taxes on the Poor, and More
http://www.truth-out.org/gop-frontrunner-cain-admits-his-9-9-9-tax-plan-would-raise-taxes-poor-and-more/1318865375
In today's On the News segment: Mitt Romney is outpacing Obama in fundraising on Wall Street, unnamed sources told The Associated Press the president will withdraw all US troops from Iraq by year's end, plant and animal species are decreasing in size due to climate change, and more.

Who Are the 1 Percent and What Do They Do for a Living?
http://www.truth-out.org/who-are-1-percent-and-what-do-they-do-living/1318860336
Mike Konczal, New Deal 2.0: "There's good reason to focus on the top 1% instead of the top 10 or 50%. There is evidence that financial pay at this elite level is correlated with deregulation and the other legal changes that brought on the crisis."

America's Secret Empire of Drone Bases
http://www.truth-out.org/americas-secret-empire-drone-bases/1318860085
Nick Turse, TomDispatch: "There's a facility outside Las Vegas where 'pilots' work in climate-controlled trailers, another at a dusty camp in Africa formerly used by the French Foreign Legion, a third at a big air base in Afghanistan where Air Force personnel sit in front of multiple computer screens, and a fourth at an air base in the United Arab Emirates that almost no one talks about. And that leaves at least 56 more such facilities to mention in an expanding American empire of unmanned drone bases being set up worldwide."

Rep. Barney Frank Connects Defense Cuts Drive to Occupy Movement
http://www.truth-out.org/barney-frank-connects-defense-cuts-drive-occupy-movement/1318867785
Isaiah J. Poole, Campaign for America's Future: "'This is where the Occupy movement can make a difference,' Frank said. 'I think they underestimate the extent to which if they mobilize and deluge members of the House and Senate with opinion - they underestimate the impact it would have.'"

Journalism in Mexico Faces Threat of Being Completely Silenced
http://www.truth-out.org/journalism-mexico-faces-threat-being-completely-silenced/1318607278
Maria Armoudian, Truthout: "But what makes Mexico even more disturbing is that it comes on the heels of a long journalistic and political struggle. Journalists struggled to earn their independence from the patronage system and in the process they profoundly altered the long-corrupt political system that had been dictated by the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party)."

Will the New Israeli Social Movement Address the Occupation?
http://www.truth-out.org/social-justice-and-occupation-israels-j14-movement-interview-haggai-matar/1318529861
David Zlutnick, Truthout: "The tent encampments grew larger and larger, encompassing huge sections of the city and spreading across the country.... But what has been generally absent from the issues raised by protesters has been the relationship among the Israeli state, the military and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian land."

Jim Hightower | The GOP Loves the Federal Spending It Hates
http://www.truth-out.org/gop-loves-federal-spending-it-hates/1318861032
Jim Hightower, Other Words: "Whatever else you think about tea-party-infused Republican leaders in Congress, at least they're consistent in their opposition to big government intrusion in the economy, right? Absolutely. Unless you count intrusions of taxpayer funds into corporate projects back in their districts."

Dean Baker | Democracy Versus Bankers at the Fed
http://www.truth-out.org/democracy-versus-bankers-fed/1318857810
Dean Baker, Truthout: "The Federal Reserve Board has provided the basis for thousands of conspiracy theories in its near 100-year existence. These conspiracies have some basis in reality as can be seen by the Fed's recent moves on monetary policy."

Argentina to Wall Street: Latin American Social Movements and the Occupation of Everything
http://www.truth-out.org/argentina-wall-street-latin-american-social-movements-and-occupation-everything/1318600472
Benjamin Dangl, Truthout: "This report from Liberty Plaza connects tactics and philosophies surrounding the Occupy Wall Street movement with similar movements in Latin America, from the popular assemblies and occupation of factories during Argentina's economic crisis in 2001-2002, to grassroots struggles for land in Brazil."

Nontraditional Teaching Promoted for Girls
http://www.truth-out.org/non-traditional-teaching-promoted-girls/1318866569
A.D. McKenzie, Inter Press Service: "'You are tired, you are harassed. You don't have proper clothes, and you don't attend school during the menstruation period. So how can you perform?'"

"Scorched Earth: Legacies of Chemical Warfare in Vietnam"
http://www.truth-out.org/scorched-earth-legacies-chemical-warfare-vietnam/1318516791
Fred A. Wilcox, Seven Stories Press: "The old soldier wears a long-sleeved shirt and shorts. His feet are bare and when he talks he appears to be listening carefully to his own words. Once, he says, this area of Cu Chi was covered with mangrove forests and jungles. Then, the spray planes appeared, moving slowly and quite low over the trees, back and forth until everything shriveled up and died."

TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES

When Andy Borowitz captures the truth of the moment, using satire, you know the ruling elite are on the defensive. There's something all too pathetically ironic about Borowitz's daily headline: "Libyan Government Warns NYPD to Exercise Restraint: Urges NATO Action to Protect American Dissidents." (http://www.borowitzreport.com/)

In a riveting unmasking of hypocrisy, a YouTube video (http://vodpod.com/watch/15543199-i-am-not-moving-short-film-occupy-wall-street?u=buzzflash&c=buzzflash) has appeared that masterfully shows the blatant hypocrisy of President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton in applying one standard for attacks on protesters overseas - and quite another in the US.

While Obama has given some lip service to the Occupy Wall Street movement, he has qualified that with an upholding of the status quo of a financial sector that cratered the US economy. And he has said nothing about the police brutality in attempts, particularly in New York, to suppress the "right of redress" protests. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/opinion/sunday/kristof-americas-primal-scream.html?hp)

Nicholas Kristof wrote in The New York Times:

"But anyone who believes in markets should be outraged that banks rig the system so that they enjoy profits in good years and bailouts in bad years.

The banks have gotten away with privatizing profits and socializing risks, and that's just another form of bank robbery."

Yet, President Obama even used Martin Luther King to project a narrative that it's really a bunch of "good people" on Wall Street who made a few mistakes. In his King memorial dedication speech (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/10/16/president-obama-martin-luther-king-jr-memorial-dedication-we-will-overcome) on October 16, Obama predicted that if Martin Luther King were alive today, "I believe he would remind us that the unemployed worker can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing all who work there."

First of all, this is not just an issue of struggling unemployed workers; it's an issue of a financial system that needs systemic reform. Second of all, it's not a minor issue of "excesses" as if the chairman of the Bank of America had an extra bottle of champagne for dinner on the company account. It is, as Kristof writes, "another form of bank robbery." Obama, his Treasury secretary and his attorney general are doing very little to prosecute those who conducted the bank robberies, but they are tolerating the arrests of those who are witnesses to the crime.

The reality is that Obama believes in this financial system, even when it has de facto disproved that it can offer much to growing the American economy. It is fossilized, state-sanctioned and subsidized greed. For Obama, who is looking to a record campaign war chest to offset low ratings and a stalled economy, Wall Street money is essential. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/17/us/politics/big-cash-edge-powers-obama-in-drive-for-2012-election.html)

The duopoly of the American two-party system, as this video reconfirms (http://vodpod.com/watch/15543199-i-am-not-moving-short-film-occupy-wall-street?u=buzzflash&c=buzzflash), will go to war for the rights of protesters overseas, but champions putting them in jail at home.

<p>While Obama has given some lip service to the Occupy Wall Street movemen=
t, he has qualified that with an upholding of the status quo of a financial=
sector that cratered the US economy. And he has said nothing about the pol=
ice brutality in attempts, particularly in New York, to suppress the "right=

<p>The banks have gotten away with privatizing profits and socializing risk=

<p>Yet, President Obama even used Martin Luther King to project a narrative=
that it's really a bunch of "good people" on Wall Street who made a few mi=

Martin Luther King were alive today, "I believe he would remind us that th=
e unemployed worker can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street witho=
ut demonizing all who work there."</p>
<p>First of all, this is not just an issue of struggling unemployed workers=
; it's an issue of a financial system that needs systemic reform. Second of=
all, it's not a minor issue of "excesses" as if the chairman of the Bank o=
f America had an extra bottle of champagne for dinner on the company accoun=
t. It is, as Kristof writes, "another form of bank robbery." Obama, his Tre=
asury secretary and his attorney general are doing very little to prosecute=
those who conducted the bank robberies, but they are tolerating the arrest=
s of those who are witnesses to the crime.</p>
<p>The reality is that Obama believes in this financial system, even when i=
t has de facto disproved that it can offer much to growing the American eco=
