t r u t h o u t | *So here we are - the first week of the 11th year of Truthout's mission.* The president, apparently tired of losing political fights, decides to do something rather bold - tax the rich. Until the Reagan era, taxing the rich had been standard practice to pay for national defense, infrastructure and social programs since the formation of the country. But over the past 30 years, political sense-making in the US has been in steep decline.
Now, it becomes an international headline when the president says that the rich should pay at least the same amount in taxes as their secretaries do. Talking heads babble on about how we are seeing a bold, new Obama. The plutocrats take to the airwaves to decry what they call "class warfare," as if, somehow, the Americans who work for a living are suddenly coming after the owners with pitchforks and torches.
*Truthout has been here for ten years to point out the absurdities and hypocrisies that the mainstream media is paid to deliver as political fact.* We work to back-fill some of the history and perspective that are so easily edited out of a commercial broadcast so a reporter can appear "neutral," or so a television station can fit in two more ads for trinkets to fill the holes in our consumer lifestyles.
And this week, as we celebrate Truthout's first decade, we're seeing sparks of what could be a real resistance movement, triggered by the atrocities against the environment and the poor, and inspired by the revolutionary spirit that has recently brought populations around the world to their feet and into the streets.
