Noam Chomsky, TomDispatch: "We are approaching the 10th anniversary of the =
horrendous atrocities of September 11, 2001, which, it is commonly held, ch=
anged the world.... A number of analysts have observed that although bin La=
den was finally killed, he won some major successes in his war against the =
U.S. 'He repeatedly asserted that the only way to drive the U.S. from the M=

f small but expensive wars that would ultimately bankrupt them,' Eric Margo=
lis writes. 'Bleeding the U.S.,' in his words. 'The United States, first un=
der George W. Bush and then Barack Obama, rushed right into bin Laden's tra=

he most pernicious legacy of the man who thought he could defeat the United=
States' - particularly when the debt is being cynically exploited by the f=

at remains of social programs, public education, unions, and, in general, r=
emaining barriers to corporate tyranny."
Creating the Intelligence Bureaucracy
http://www.truth-out.org/creating-intelligence-bureaucracy/1314135656
Nancy Murray and Kade Crockford, Truthout and ACLU Massachusetts: "One hund=
red and three years ago, then-attorney general Charles Bonaparte enlisted s=
ome private detectives and members of the Treasury Department's Secret Serv=
ice (set up in the aftermath of the Civil War to ferret out counterfeiting)=
as special agents in his newly created Bureau of Investigation. At a time =
when Congress was staunchly against any federal power engaging in political=
surveillance, its role was initially limited to investigating interstate c=
rime and crimes on federal property. Those limitations did not last long. T=
he seed had been planted of what would become a massive intelligence and ho=
meland security bureaucracy involving 1,271 government organizations and 1,=
931 private companies ... How did we get from there to here?"
Reports Say Loyalists Are Fleeing From Libya to Niger
http://www.truth-out.org/reports-say-loyalists-are-feeling-libya-niger/1315=
315362
Rob Nordland, Adam Nossiter and Alan Cowell, The New York Times News Servic=
e: "As rebel negotiators press loyalists in the desert town of Bani Walid t=
o surrender peacefully before a Sept. 10 deadline, a long convoy of Libyan =
Army vehicles was reported on Tuesday to have crossed the country's souther=
n border into Niger in what could represent a shift in the balance of power=
after six months of conflict."

More
http://www.truth-out.org/news-thom-hartmann-mitt-romney-lay-out-jobs-plan-t=
oday-and-more/1315323829
In today's On the News segment: Mitt Romney is expected to lay out his plan=
for job creation today in Nevada, Obama's job approval numbers continue to=
plunge, Labor Day in Wisconsin spent rallying workers against Gov. Scott W=
alker, US issued ultimatum to Switzerland to disclose secret Swiss bank acc=
ounts, post office running out of cash and may shut down this winter, and m=
ore.
CIA's Push for Drone War Driven by Internal Needs
http://www.truth-out.org/cias-push-drone-war-driven-internal-needs/13153309=
45
Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: "When David Petraeus walks into the Cen=
tral Intelligence Agency Tuesday, he will be taking over an organization wh=
ose mission has changed in recent years from gathering and analyzing intell=
igence to waging military campaigns through drone strikes in Pakistan, as w=
ell as in Yemen and Somalia. But the transformation of the CIA did not simp=
ly follow the expansion of the drone war in Pakistan to its present level. =
CIA Director Michael Hayden lobbied hard for that expansion at a time when =
drone strikes seemed like a failed experiment. The reason Hayden pushed for=
a much bigger drone war, it now appears, is that it had already created a =
whole bureaucracy in the anticipation of such a war."
Now Obama Has Zero Choice but to Go Bold on Jobs
http://www.truth-out.org/jobs-report-message-now-obama-has-zero-choice-go-b=
old-jobs/1315317910
Isaiah J. Poole, Campaign for America's Future: "Zero. That was the number =
of net jobs produced by the economy in August, according to the Bureau of L=
abor Statistics. Zero is the number that looms above President Obama as he =
delivers his address Thursday to a joint session of Congress. The imperativ=
e for the president is now more clear than ever. He must present a bold, vi=
sionary plan to address today's jobs emergency, or risk delivering to the n=
ation's unemployed ... zero."
Libya's Next Fight: The West
http://www.truth-out.org/libyas-next-fight-west/1315318480
Ramzy Baroud, The Palestine Chronicle: "Listening to upbeat statements by r=
ebel military commanders, and optimistic assessments of National Transition=
al Council members, one gets the impression that the future of Libya is bei=
ng entirely formulated by the new Libyan leadership. Arab media, led by Al =
Jazeera, seemed at times to entirely neglect that there was a third and mos=
t powerful party involved in the battle between freedom-seeking Libyans and=
the obstinate dictator. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, whos=
e decisive and financially costly military intervention was not charitable,=
nor was it a moral act. It was a politically and strategically calculated =
endeavor, with multifaceted objectives that simply cannot be scrutinized in=
one article."

Getting Those Republican Attacks Right=20
http://www.truth-out.org/getting-those-republican-attacks-right/1315315684
Dean Baker, Truthout: "At this point, Republican politicians are beginning =
to sound almost like wind-up toys when they complain about job-killing taxe=
s and regulations that keep businesses from hiring. The media should at lea=
st do the Republicans and the public the courtesy of attempting to discern =
if these complaints make any sense. (McClatchy gets high marks for this eff=
ort.) If the charges are true, then there are logical implications that can=
be explored. The media should be taking the time to see whether the eviden=
ce is consistent with Republican claims. The tax side of the story is prett=
y simple. The Republicans are making things up."
Hartmann: Unequal Responsibility for Crime
http://www.truth-out.org/unequal-responsibility-crime/1315328149
Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: "Every year the Federal Bureau o=
f Investigation (FBI) issues a press release on its Uniform Crime Reporting=
Program, which determines the 'Nation's Crime Index.' It reports crimes by=
persons - but it excludes corporate persons, even when the corporations ha=
ve been convicted of felonies. In its entire history, the FBI has never iss=
ued an annual report on crimes by corporate persons, although its reports o=
n crimes by human persons are well researched and well publicized. The upsh=
ot of this is that when you ask people how most money and property are stol=
en, or how most people are killed, they think of burglars and muggers and b=
ank robbers and crimes of passion. They think of human persons. The reality=
, though, is that more money and property are stolen by or lost to corporat=
e criminals than to human criminals."
Remembering the Moment Our CEOs Dug in
http://www.truth-out.org/remembering-moment-our-ceos-dug/1315319786
Sam Pizzigati, Inequality.org: "Forty years ago, U.S. corporate honchos saw=
their power ebbing away. So they did what corporate honchos always do. The=
y asked for a memo.... The memo would remain confidential until syndicated =
national columnist Jack Anderson did an expose in 1973. That publicity only=
served to whet corporate interest.... By year's end, a Chamber of Commerce=
task force - with executives from corporate giants ranging from G.E. to Ge=
neral Motors - had translated the Powell memo into action plan specifics...=
. The number of corporate public affairs offices in Washington, D.C. would =
quintuple between 1968 and 1978, from 100 to over 500. In 1971, Hacker and =
Pierson relate, only 175 U.S. corporations had registered lobbyists in Wash=
ington. The 1982 total: almost 2,500."
Paul Krugman | Facts That Strain Personal Incredulity
http://www.truth-out.org/facts-strain-personal-incredulity/1315319388
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "Somewhere in his writings Richard Dawkins, th=
e British evolutionary biologist, talks about anti-evolution types who argu=
e from personal incredulity - they say, 'I just can't believe that chance c=
ould create something as complex as an eye,' and think that they have score=
d an important point. All they've actually done, of course, is rehash their=
prejudices. (Simulations show, by the way, that chance plus selection can =
indeed create an eye, in a relatively short time as evolutionary history go=
es.) I'm getting the same kind of thing a lot on issues macroeconomic."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
Tony Blair didn't just play godfather to one of Rupert Murdoch's daughters =
by his third wife. Blair is the godfather. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/comme=
ntisfree/2011/sep/05/tony-blair-godfather-murdoch-daughter )
People generally pick close friends to honor by being a godparent, so Murdo=
ch didn't choose Blair by accident. According to The Guardian UK, "Murdoch'=
s third wife, Wendi Deng, who let slip the information in an interview with=
Vogue, described Blair as one of Rupert's closest friends."
Meanwhile, the British Parliament has once again begun hearings on the Murd=
och News Corp. hacking and bribery scandal. The incestuous relationships of=
Murdoch with UK governments of both the Labour and Conservative Parties fl=
ow seamlessly from one parliamentary majority to another. The current UK Pr=
ime Minister, Conservative David Cameron, has been so tight with Murdoch th=
at Cameron's former press secretary was one of Murdoch's infamous tabloid e=
ditors.
As Henry Porter scathingly observes in The Guardian UK: "Real political pow=
er always works unseen, and that is how Murdoch has pulled the levers in Br=
itish society. Prime ministers who accept Murdoch's support end up doing hi=
s bidding."
Add British Petroleum to the mix, as it is the first- or second-largest com=
pany in the UK, depending upon the criteria used (http://www.forbes.com/lis=
ts/2010/18/global-2000-10_The-Global-2000_Rank.html) - and you have a trium=
virate of government/media propaganda and corruption/big oil corporate rule=
. There is little doubt that BP, for instance, played an enormous role in i=
nfluencing Blair to back the invasion of Iraq - and it has always figured p=
rominently in relations with Libya.
The result of this chronic triumvirate rule (and add a host of other corpor=
ations to join BP in the winner's circle) is that the UK has the semblance =
of democracy, but the structure of the elite status quo remains basically u=
nchanged under governments of any political party.
If that sounds a lot like how things are in the United States, that's becau=
se it is.

<font><strong>Paul Krugman | Facts That Strain Personal Incredulity</strong=
></font><br />
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "Somewhere in his writings Richard Dawkins=
, the British evolutionary biologist, talks about anti-evolution types who =
argue from personal incredulity - they say, 'I just can't believe that chan=
ce could create something as complex as an eye,' and think that they have s=
cored an important point. All they've actually done, of course, is rehash t=
heir prejudices. (Simulations show, by the way, that chance plus selection =
can indeed create an eye, in a relatively short time as evolutionary histor=
y goes.) I'm getting the same kind of thing a lot on issues macroeconomic."=

<p>Tony Blair didn't just play godfather to one of Rupert Murdoch's daughte=
rs by his third wife. <a href=3D"http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/trac=
k.jsp?v=3D2&c=3DTiL7oZsv44pNLjdAtz2765K8bFbq5Nkd"><font color=3D"#cc0000">B=
lair <strong>is</strong> the godfather.</font></a></p>
<p>People generally pick close friends to honor by being a godparent, so Mu=
rdoch didn't choose Blair by accident. According to The Guardian UK, "Murdo=
ch's third wife, Wendi Deng, who let slip the information in an interview w=
ith Vogue, described Blair as one of Rupert's closest friends."</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the British Parliament has once again begun hearings on the M=
urdoch News Corp. hacking and bribery scandal. The incestuous relationships=
of Murdoch with UK governments of both the Labour and Conservative Parties=
flow seamlessly from one parliamentary majority to another. The current UK=
Prime Minister, Conservative David Cameron, has been so tight with Murdoch=
that Cameron's former press secretary was one of Murdoch's infamous tabloi=
d editors.</p>
<p>As Henry Porter scathingly observes in The Guardian UK: "Real political =
power always works unseen, and that is how Murdoch has pulled the levers in=
British society. Prime ministers who accept Murdoch's support end up doing=
his bidding."</p>
<p>Add British Petroleum to the mix, as it is <a href=3D"http://org2.democr=
acyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=3D2&c=3DVpVxdCjzInhpoKOfSTE5OZK8bFbq5Nkd"><=
font color=3D"#cc0000">the first- or second-largest company in the UK</font=
></a>, depending upon the criteria used - and you have a triumvirate of gov=
ernment/media propaganda and corruption/big oil corporate rule. There is li=
ttle doubt that BP, for instance, played an enormous role in influencing Bl=
air to back the invasion of Iraq - and it has always figured prominently in=
relations with Libya.</p>
<p>The result of this chronic triumvirate rule (and add a host of other cor=
porations to join BP in the winner's circle) is that the UK has the semblan=
ce of democracy, but the structure of the elite status quo remains basicall=
y unchanged under governments of any political party.</p>
<p>If that sounds a lot like how things are in the United States, that's be=
cause it is.</p>
