But when the Carnegie Corporation offered to provide the lead grant for a new show featuring creative thinkers he and his wife Judith, his long-time television partner, decided to return to TV. The Super Committee can include anything it wants in its package - short-term economic stimulus (like extending unemployment benefits and the payroll tax holiday), revenue increases from curtailing tax breaks, cuts in military or domestic spending, subject only to two constraints. To avoid automatic cuts, the package has to add up to $1.2 trillion in debt reduction over ten years. Also, to avoid automatic cuts, the package has to pass both houses of Congress in December, so the package has to have the property that it can pass the House and Senate."

We had just left the gallery and were discussing possible restaurants for a Friday night dinner when my FEMA pager buzzed. These were still my pre-cell phone days, so I borrowed my wife's phone to call in to the NRCC and see what was up. My co-worker Matt picked up on the first ring. It seemed that an Atlantic storm had crossed south Florida and entered the Gulf of Mexico, where it could endanger Louisiana, Mississippi, and other states along the Gulf. The NRCC was being activated and I was to report in for night shift at 7 PM. The storm had been given a name: 'Hurricane Katrina.'"

Unless there are a lot of miraculous, virgin births in Texas, Rick Perry's taxpayer-funded emphasis on abstinence education is a bust.
According to an Associated Press (AP) article, (http://www.ktxs.com/news/26781783/detail.html) "Teen pregnancy rates declined in the US, while more teens in Texas are getting pregnant.... Texas is in the top ten states for having the most pregnant teens, rising seven percent to more than 44,000."
In a recent previous commentary on BuzzFlash at Truthout (http://blog.buzzflash.com/node/12959), we wrote that "Perry adamantly defended the [abstinence education] program. This is not only a Victorian outlook, it contradicts the right-wing notion that every government program should be judged by its effectiveness."
The AP report quoted the manager of the West Texas Planned Parenthood Clinic about the pregnant teens who she sees:
"'They're not educated in the pregnancy itself and in the options that they have about birth control or they don't know anything about STDs,' [the manager] said. 'They're just uneducated about it. The school district is abstinence only.'"
Enforced ignorance doesn't reduce teen pregnancy; it just makes it more likely. Moreover, abstinence-only education is a cruelty visited upon young women who don't want to become mothers so early in their lives.
Rick Perry's harmful political stakeout to attract religious right voters is an abuse of teenagers. There's nothing miraculous about the teenage pregnancy rate in Texas. It's born of selfish ambition, pure and simple.

<p>Unless there are a lot of miraculous, virgin births in Texas, Rick Perry's taxpayer-funded emphasis on abstinence education is a bust.</p>
<p>According to an <a href="http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=2MbKHQHh%2Fp70JLWTWKV5C2xMvajPh1Em"><font color="#cc0000">Associated Press (AP) article</font></a>, "Teen pregnancy rates declined in the US, while more teens in Texas are getting pregnant.... Texas is in the top ten states for having the most pregnant teens, rising seven percent to more than 44,000."</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=DmeSnifc%2FcoqY1GDREUEz03tbyAFTrlV"><font color="#cc0000">recent previous commentary on BuzzFlash at Truthout</font></a>, we wrote that "Perry adamantly defended the [abstinence education] program. This is not only a Victorian outlook, it contradicts the right-wing notion that every government program should be judged by its effectiveness."</p>
<p>The AP report quoted the manager of the West Texas Planned Parenthood Clinic about the pregnant teens who she sees:</p>

<p>"They're not educated in the pregnancy itself and in the options that they have about birth control or they don't know anything about STDs," [the manager] said. "They're just uneducated about it. The school district is abstinence only."</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Enforced ignorance doesn't reduce teen pregnancy; it just makes it more likely. Moreover, abstinence-only education is a cruelty visited upon young women who don't want to become mothers so early in their lives.</p>
<p>Rick Perry's harmful political stakeout to attract religious right voters is an abuse of teenagers. There's nothing miraculous about the teenage pregnancy rate in Texas. It's born of selfish ambition, pure and simple.</p>
