t r u t h o u t | Being a young journalist in a time of historically high young adult unemployment - along with the constant prediction of "the death of journalism" - is no easy task. Making a living in media that's not supported by Austrialian billionaires (or other shady figures cut from the same cloth) can be even harder.
That's why Truthout's rare committment to paying its interns, encouraging diverse voices and spotlighting under-reported stories has been a reason for me to get out of bed and go to work, both as a writer and a reader.
In an increasingly embattled media culture on the sinking ship of our national economy, it's not enough to just publish progressive stories. Treating employees' labor with the standards of humanity and respect that you advocate for the rest of the system is also crucial.
