New Court Filing Reveals How the 2004 Ohio Presidential Election Was Hacked
http://www.truth-out.org/new-court-filing-reveals-how-2004-ohio-presidential-election-was-hacked/1311603015
Bob Fritakis, The Free Press: "A new filing in the King Lincoln Bronzeville v. Blackwell case includes a copy of the Ohio Secretary of State election production system configuration that was in use in Ohio's 2004 presidential election when there was a sudden and unexpected shift in votes for George W. Bush. The filing also includes the revealing deposition of the late Michael Connell. Connell served as the IT guru for the Bush family and Karl Rove."
Emails Show White House Promotes Genetically Engineered Crops in Wildlife Refuges
http://www.truth-out.org/emails-show-white-house-promotes-ge-crops-wildlife-refuges/1311621066
Mike Ludwig, Truthout: "The Obama administration is supporting genetically engineered (GE) agriculture in more than 50 national wildlife refuges across the country and watchdog groups say internal emails among top administration officials reveal that the GE plots are a priority in the White House. Earlier this year, a settlement in a lawsuit filed by the watchdog group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) and its allies halted the planting of GE crops in US Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife refuges in northeastern states. Now PEER claims the Obama administration is working with the biotech lobby to shield GE plots in refuges from future legal challenges."
Former Guantanamo Chief Prosecutor: David Hicks' War Crimes Charge Was a "Favor" for Australia
http://www.truth-out.org/former-guantanamo-chief-prosecutor-david-hicks-war-crimes-charge-was-favor-australia/1311603758
Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Last week, the Australian government announced that it would initiate legal proceedings to try and seize royalty payments David Hicks has received following the publication of his memoir, 'Guantanamo: My Journey,' about the five years he spent at the prison facility, charging that he has violated the country's laws by profiting from a crime. Hicks, 35, who gave his first interview to Truthout in February, pleaded guilty in 2007 to providing material support for terrorism."
On the News With Thom Hartmann: With Doomsday Economic Scenario Approaching, Republicans Poised to Come Out on Top, and More
http://www.truth-out.org/news-thom-hartmann/1311609655
In today's On the News segment: As we approach doomsday, economic scenario nears with Republicans poised to come out on top; 4,000 FAA workers are screwed because of another Republican stunt; Norway mourning after Friday's terrorist attacks; stock market poised for a rocky week with no debt-limit deal; unemployment for male veterans age 18 to 24 is 28 percent; and more.
Dean Baker | The Payroll Tax Cut: A Stimulus That Progressives Should Oppose
http://www.truth-out.org/payroll-tax-cut-stimulus-progressives-should-oppose/1311605717
Dean Baker, Truthout: "President Obama is proud of the fact that he was willing to bargain away the core of the country's social safety net to reach an agreement with the Republicans on the debt ceiling. According to accounts of the negotiations, he had agreed to raise the eligibility age for Medicare to 67. He had also agreed to a change in the cost-of-living adjustment formula for Social Security that would reduce benefits by an average of more than 3 percent. This is in addition to the cuts in Medicaid and other programs that would also have been part of the deal. Fortunately, the Republicans walked away because of the tax increases in the deal."
New York Times Reporting Misses the Mark on Iceland, Prints Neoliberal Line
http://www.truth-out.org/new-york-times-reporting-misses-mark-iceland-prints-neoliberal-line/1311020651
Sam Knight, Truthout: "'Everyone is entitled to his own opinion,' the late former Sen. Patrick Moynihan once said, 'but not to his own facts.' Does this explain why The New York Times' editorial board appears to believe that its opinion pieces don't require fact-checking? Their routinely misleading editorials are based on opinions that the editorial boards are entitled to have, after all; never mind the idea that opinions should be based on fact. And a prime example of flimsy Times editorializing can be found in a piece dated from April 18 about a subject that exemplifies catastrophic dishonesty itself: the economy of Iceland."
Rival Debt Plans Being Assembled by Party Leaders
http://www.truth-out.org/rival-debt-plans-being-assembled-party-leaders/1311600060
Jennifer Steinhauer and Helene Cooper, The New York Times News Service: "The House speaker, John A. Boehner, and the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, were preparing separate backup plans to raise the nation's debt ceiling on Sunday after they and the White House were unable to form a bipartisan plan that would end an increasingly grim standoff over the federal budget. The dueling plans emerged after Mr. Boehner walked away from negotiations with the White House on Friday, leading to a frustrating weekend of talks in heat-scorched Washington."
Harry Reid Calls House Republicans' Bluff
http://www.truth-out.org/harry-reid-calls-house-republicans-bluff/1311610669
Matthew Yglesias, ThinkProgress: "Something you often see in negotiations is a mismatch between one side's stated sticking points and its real sticking points. In the debate over the debt ceiling, for example, Republicans have sought to portray themselves as having two bottom lines. One is that any increase in the debt ceiling must be met dollar-for-dollar with spending cuts. The other is that no revenue increases can be part of the deal. What Harry Reid did yesterday was essentially call the GOP's bluff by outlining a plan that raises the debt ceiling by $2.7 trillion and includes $2.7 trillion in spending cuts, a healthy share of which comes from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Black Chicago Divided
http://www.truth-out.org/black-chicago-divided/1311599009
Salim Muwakkil, In These Times: "Martavius (Mark) Carter is both the product and perpetrator of a growing class divide in black America. He is a resident of Chicago's distressed North Lawndale neighborhood and a founding member of the Voice of the Ex-Offender (VOTE), a group created to empower black people who were once imprisoned. The group's approach is based on a protest model of direct action, and they intend to be a disruptive force. This neighborhood, together with adjacent West Side communities like East and West Garfield Park, Humboldt Park and Austin, has a 52-percent youth unemployment rate - the highest in the entire nation."
Murdoch's 12 Mortal Sins
http://www.truth-out.org/murdochs-12-mortal-sins/1311614806
Russ Baker, Who What Why: "Rupert Murdoch has had a profound influence on the state of journalism today. It's a kind of tribute, in some sense, that the general coverage of his current troubles has reflected the detrimental effect of his influence over the years. Right now, the media, by and large, are focusing on tawdry 'police blotter' acts of the very sort that have historically informed Murdoch's own tabloid sensibility, while the bigger picture gets short shrift."
Jim Hightower | Budgeting for Ignorance
http://www.truth-out.org/budgeting-ignorance/1311600506
Jim Hightower, OtherWords: All across the country, right-wing zealots are wielding their little ideological hammers to destroy common sense and wreck the common good. These anti-government extremists are going after everything from the basic rights of workers to our crucial environmental protections. Their most shameful assault, however, is on our public schools. They're not merely clobbering teachers and shattering education budgets; they're after the very idea of public education."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
Ignorance isn't bliss, or so we are learning as political discourse based on misinformation plays itself out in the corporate mass media and the halls of Congress.
As the narrator/director of the cult classic documentary, "Orwell Rolls in His Grave," (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift42-gift/choose-type-donation) asks: "Could a media system, controlled by a few global corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?"
The answer, of course, is yes.
The corporate media and right-wing-backed think tanks dispense what essentially are lies - often initiated by the right wing or the government (think weapons of mass destruction etc., under Bush) - and then drumbeat a public policy discussion based on the false perceptions held by many Americans, because this is the "information" provided by the media, particularly television.
For example, most Americans don't understand how inequitable the income distribution is in the US because the corporate press doesn't correctly inform them - or much discuss - the disparity. (http://theangryliberal.blogspot.com/2011/07/following-graphic-is-extremely.html )
In short, much of our public policy is made based on the propaganda that benefits corporate profits and the super wealthy - and is disseminated through television, radio and, to a slightly lesser degree, print media.
"Orwell Rolls in His Grave" (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift42-gift/choose-type-donation ) - produced during the Bush administration - provides a detailed examination of how the US debates public policy based on the mistruths that are passed off as "news" and "facts" by a media that is a mouthpiece for the oligarchy and the elite status quo, not an objective conveyor of information that is needed to decide public policy.
Have we reached the level of thought-control government and media imagined by Orwell in "1984"?
Watch "Orwell Rolls in His Grave" (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift42-gift/choose-type-donation ) and find out how chillingly close we are. It is the Truthout Progressive Pick of the Week, and being offered as a gift with a minimum contribution through special arrangement with the director.
