Henry A. Giroux | Trickle-Down Cruelty and the Politics of Austerity
http://www.truth-out.org/trickle-down-cruelty-and-politics-austerity/1310134880
Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "The global recession has intensified the war on the American public, as professionals and politicians who make up a global business class now displace democracy with the call for austerity and, in doing so, produce a hidden order of politics in which the 'demand for the people's austerity hides processes of the uneven distribution of risk and vulnerability.' Under the guise of austerity, politically motivated attacks are now being waged on young people, low-skilled workers, the poor, African-Americans and the elderly."
The Strange Silencing of Liberal America
http://www.truth-out.org/strange-silencing-liberal-america/1310147926
John Pilger, Truthout: "How does political censorship work in liberal societies? When my film, 'Year Zero: the Silent Death of Cambodia,' was banned in the United States in 1980, the broadcaster PBS cut all contact. Negotiations were ended abruptly; phone calls were not returned. Something had happened. But what?"
Chris Hedges | Carlos Montes and the Security State: A Cautionary Tale
http://www.truth-out.org/carlos-montes-and-security-state-cautionary-tale/1310392149
Chris Hedges, Truthdig: "On May 17 at 5 in the morning the Chicano activist Carlos Montes got a wake-up call at his home in California from Barack Obama's security state. The Los Angeles County sheriff's SWAT team, armed with assault rifles and wearing bulletproof vests, as well as being accompanied by FBI agents, kicked down his door, burst into his house with their weapons drawn, handcuffed him in his pajamas and hauled him off to jail."
On the News With Thom Hartmann: Not Jailing Marijuana Users Saved Philadelphia Over $2 Million, and More
http://www.truth-out.org/news-thom-hartmann-not-jailing-marijuana-users-saved-philadelphia-over-2-million-and-more/1310397225
In today's On the News segment: Making Obama a one-term president is McConnell's single most important goal, inequity factors contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths in US, Murdoch's organization tried to pay off New York police for phone numbers of 9/11 victims, clean up after Fukushima will take more than a decade, not jailing marijuana users saves Philadelphia over $2 million, and more.
War Without Humans: Modern Blood Rites Revisited
http://www.truth-out.org/war-without-humans-modern-blood-rites-revisited/1310390766
Barbara Ehrenreich, TomDispatch: "For a book about the all-too-human 'passions of war,' my 1997 work Blood Rites ended on a strangely inhuman note: I suggested that, whatever distinctly human qualities war calls upon - honor, courage, solidarity, cruelty, and so forth - it might be useful to stop thinking of war in exclusively human terms. After all, certain species of ants wage war and computers can simulate wars that play themselves out on-screen without any human involvement. A decade and a half later, these musings do not seem quite so airy and abstract anymore."
Budget Blowhards: Why the Budget Debate Is Destined to Become Ever More Painful
http://www.truth-out.org/budget-blowhards-why-budget-debate-destined-become-ever-more-painful/1310390500
Dean Baker, Truthout: "There are few exercises more entertaining than ridiculing the nonsense that comes out of the mouths of leaders in Washington. The great part is that this is completely bipartisan. Neither party has a monopoly on solemnly stated absurdities. And, of course, we never have to worry about running out of material. The winner in last week's contest was John Kasich, the former Republican chair of the House Budget Committee and the current governor of Ohio."
Greed at a Glance
http://www.truth-out.org/greed-glance/1310394081
Sam Pizzigatti, Institute for Policy Studies: "Over the past decade, new Environmental Working Group data show, Manhattan mega millionaire and John D. great-grandson Mark Rockefeller has pocketed nearly $330,000 in federal subsidies for not farming an Idaho property billed as 'one of the world's premier fly-fishing retreats.' That's much more than half the $500,000 in federal funding that food banks in North Idaho may shortly lose to federal budget cuts. Why aren't taxpayer groups that claim to worry about waste, Idaho social worker leader Delmar Stone wondered last week, 'investigating the obscene loopholes and taxpayer giveaways to the super-rich?'"
In Iraq, Panetta Says US Will Maintain "Enduring Presence"
http://www.truth-out.org/iraq-panetta-says-us-will-maintain-enduring-presence/1310403540
Elisabeth Bumiller, The New York Times News Service: "Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta pressured Prime Minister Nuri Kamal-al Maliki of Iraq on Monday to tell the United States whether he wanted some American troops to remain in Iraq into 2012, although Mr. Panetta predicted that the United States military would have an 'enduring presence' for many years in the Middle East."
QE2 Shocker: The Whole $600 Billion Wound Up Offshore
http://www.truth-out.org/qe2-shocker-whole-600-billion-wound-offshore/1310145225
Ellen Brown, Truthout: "On June 30, QE2 ended with a whimper. The Fed's second round of 'quantitative easing' involved $600 billion created with a computer keystroke for the purchase of long-term government bonds. But the government never actually got the money, which went straight into the reserve accounts of banks, where it still sits today. Worse, it went into the reserve accounts of FOREIGN banks, on which the Federal Reserve is now paying 0.25 percent interest."
By Torpedoing the Gaza Flotilla, Israel Sunk Its Own Ship
http://www.truth-out.org/torpedoing-gaza-flotilla-israel-sunk-its-own-ship/1310392236
Medea Benjamin, Truthout: "Last year, when the Israeli military killed nine aboard the Turkish ship, the incident made waves around the world. But in previous years, the same international coalition had sent boats to Gaza five times, successfully reaching their destination with a symbolic shipment of humanitarian aid. No blood, no military interception, no story. That's why the advice of many of Israel's best buddies, including the lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), was to just ignore the flotilla."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
The real death of the American Dream is the roaring defense of an imploding joblessness situation by the status quo in DC.
It is a de facto claim in DC that we can do little to improve the plight of those seeking work, or as Paul Krugman notes on July 11: We "won't" do anything to improve the economy. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/11/opinion/11krugman.html?_r=1)
Forget the cliches about every American aspiring to own a home and have good schools; what made the promise of the US at all possible was innovation, daring and boldness. And all we have in DC now is amassed corporate and individual wealth stifling, as BuzzFlash recently noted (http://blog.buzzflash.com/node/12828), innovation and ingenuity. We could accept the challenge of putting a man on the moon, but abandon hope of creating jobs for all Americans who seek them.
Krugman points out that one of the canards against moving aggressively against large-scale unemployment is a false charge against the nature of the workers themselves. In a highly insightful lecture/DVD by Richard D. Wolff (a Truthout Progressive Pick of the Week)(https://members.truth-out.org/bgift40-gift/choose-type-donation), Professor Wolff points out statistical, factual proof that American worker productivity has steadily grown over the past 20 years, but wages have remained stagnant.
America was built on the backs of labor, but the "Masters of the Universe" who buy factories to close them down and ship production overseas get credit for "boosting the economy." That might be deserved if you are giving kudos to Wal-Mart for increasing employment in China, where an extremely large percentage of their products are made.
In "Capitalism Hits the Fan" (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift40-gift/choose-type-donation), Wolff shows how financiers and corporations grew fat on the growth of the debt owed by the working class. Why did the debt grow for laboring Americans? Because with wages that remained basically dormant when adjusted for inflation, the middle class had to go into debt, which increased the wealth of banks and companies due to the percentage of interest owed to repay loans, including - of course - credit cards.
We can put a man on the moon, but our government and corporations are willfully helpless in putting men and women to work.
