t r u t h o u t | Dear Readers,

Truthout's *"Progressive Pick of the Week"* program has gotten off to a great start! We kicked off this special service last month, selecting some of the best recent progressive books and films for you to obtain directly from Truthout. The "Pick of the Week" helps to bolster independent authors and filmmakers, and also provides an opportunity to support our organization.

Check out the four picks we selected over the last month:

"Freedom Riders" (DVD) [ https://members.truth-out.org/bgift37-gift/choose-type-donation ]: A monumentally important documentary about the power of moral authority to prevail against the KKK, racist elected officials, and even the reluctance of the Kennedy brothers to stir up what was then the Democratic (albeit segregationist) South.

"Capitalism Hits the Fan" (DVD) [ https://members.truth-out.org/bgift40-gift/choose-type-donation ]: [ https://members.truth-out.org/bgift40-gift/choose-type-donation ] Economist Richard Wolff offers an electrifying explanation of how the "American Dream" evolved into the "Nightmare on Wall Street." Normally lectures (if you remember them from college) leave a lot of time for daydreaming, but Wolff's explanation is so timely and cogent that you won't want to break away.

"Merchants of Doubt" (Paperback) [ https://members.truth-out.org/bgift35-gift/choose-type-donation ]: This book exposes how radical think tanks have created a cadre of scientists - motivated by money and ideology - to debunk established scientific facts on threats such as DDT, tobacco, nuclear weapons and global warming.

"Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future" (Paperback) [ https://members.truth-out.org/bgift36-gift/choose-type-donation ]: This book is a must-read by a regular Truthout contributor Robert Reich who served as Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. Reich has been an economic Jeremiah, and in "Aftershock," he warns that our country's ever-increasing wealth gap could trigger a true financial implosion. Reich offers an alternative path: real structural reform of our financial system, allowing a significant reduction in the concentration of wealth and power.

In addition to these, you can regularly find banners announcing new "Truthout Progressive Picks" on the Truthout homepage [ http://www.truth-out.org ] and on BuzzFlash at Truthout [ http://www.buzzflash.com ].

Thank you for supporting our work and the work of these influential independent intellectuals!

Sincerely,

The Truthout Staff
