The Corrupt Corporate Incarceration Complex
http://www.truth-out.org/public-private-incarceration-complex/1309275395
William Fisher, Truthout: "In Scranton, Pennsylvania, two judges pleaded guilty to operating a kickback scheme involving juvenile offenders. The judges, Mark Ciavarella Jr. and Michael Conahan, took more than $2.6 million in kickbacks from a private prison company to send teenagers to two privately run youth detention centers. Since 2003, Ciaverella had sentenced an estimated 5,000 juveniles. Conahan was accused of setting up the contracts. Many of the youngsters shipped off to the detention centers were first-time offenders."
How the Bailout Killed Local Lending - and How Some States Hope to Bring It Back
http://www.truth-out.org/how-bailout-killed-local-lending-and-how-some-states-hope-bring-it-back/1309527553
Ellen Brown, YES! Magazine: "The Wall Street bailout of 2008 has radically altered the banking business. The bailout was supposed to keep credit flowing to Main Street, but it has wound up having the opposite effect. Small- and medium-sized businesses have traditionally been the main engines for increasing employment, and they need bank credit for their working capital; but today credit to local businesses has collapsed nearly everywhere. That's why so many states - the total is now fourteen - are considering turning to state-owned banks to get local credit flowing again."
US Widens Inquiries Into Two Jail Deaths
http://www.truth-out.org/us-widens-inquiries-2-jail-deaths/1309533139
Eric Lichtblau and Eric Schmitt, The New York Times: "The Justice Department announced Thursday that it was opening a full criminal investigation into the deaths of two terrorism suspects in CIA custody overseas, but it was closing inquiries into the treatment of nearly 100 other detainees over the last decade. Attorney General Eric H Holder Jr said that a two-year review by a specially appointed prosecutor, John H Durham, had determined that any further investigation into that large group of cases 'is not warranted.' The inquiry into the two deaths, though, could result in criminal charges against Central Intelligence Agency officers or contractors."
Why Media-Centric Political Action Often Fails
http://www.truth-out.org/why-media-centric-political-action-often-fails/1309523412
Adina Nack, Girl w/Pen!: "With the buzz about Michele Bachmann running for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, many journalists are wondering about the Tea Party's power. So, I'm taking a break from blogging about healthy bodies to focus on healthy politics and share a recent email exchange with Tufts sociologist Sarah Sobieraj, Ph.D. whose new book Soundbitten: The Perils of Media-Centered Political Activism (NYU Press) takes readers inside activist groups' struggles to get their issues and perspectives covered in the news."
Dominique Strauss-Kahn Is Released as Case Teeters
http://www.truth-out.org/dominique-strauss-kahn-released-case-teeters/1309539785
John Eligon, The New York Times News Service: "Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest on Friday as the sexual assault case against him moved one step closer to dismissal after prosecutors told a Manhattan judge that they had serious problems with the case. Prosecutors acknowledged that there were significant credibility issues with the hotel housekeeper who accused Mr. Strauss-Kahn of trying to rape her in May. In a brief hearing at State Supreme Court in Manhattan, prosecutors did not oppose his release; the judge then freed Mr. Strauss-Kahn on his own recognizance. The development represented a stunning reversal in a case that reshaped the French political landscape and sparked debate about morals, the treatment of women and the American justice system."
Tens of Thousands Strike in Britain Over Public Pensions
http://www.truth-out.org/public-workers-strike-britain-over-pensions/1309547373
Sarah Lyall, The New York Times News Service: "Joining a growing wave of unrest in Europe over government austerity measures, tens of thousands of British teachers and public-sector workers walked off their jobs on Thursday to protest proposed changes to their pension plans. More than 10,000 schools were affected by the strikes, as were universities, Social Security offices, courtrooms, airport customs desks and other government operations. Union officials warned that the strike could be the first of a series of walkouts here in the next few months, reflecting growing unhappiness over layoffs, salary freezes, tax increases and a persistently sluggish economy."
US Boat to Gaza Attempts to Leave Greece for Gaza
http://www.truth-out.org/us-boat-gaza-attempts-leave-greece-gaza/1309546520
Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: "The U.S.-flagged ship 'The Audacity of Hope' left a Greek port today bound for Gaza, but the status of the 10-boat flotilla remains uncertain. At least one boat has already pulled out due to sabotage ... the Greek government ... blocked the ships' departure under international pressure. On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is entitled to stop the flotilla as part of its 'full right to operate against efforts to smuggle' weapons into Gaza."
On the News With Thom Hartmann: Majority Leader Eric Cantor Has Financial Stake in Dollar Collapse, and More
http://www.truth-out.org/news-thom-hartmann-majority-leader-eric-cantor-has-financial-stake-dollar-collapse/1309535973
In today's On the News segment, Thom Hartmann discusses the shut down of government in Minnesota, how the rich are profiting from the current economic situation, why House Majority Leader Cantor walked away from debt-limit negotiations, and more.
Minnesota Government Shuts in Budget Fight
http://www.truth-out.org/minnesota-government-shuts-budget-fight/1309526848
Monica Davey, The New York Times News Service: "Minnesota began what is expected to become the broadest shutdown of state services in its history early Friday, after Republicans and Democrats there failed to agree on how to solve the state's budget woes in time for the new fiscal year. And so, on the eve of a holiday weekend, residents were likely to find the state's parks, historical sites and the Minnesota Zoo closed, hunting and fishing licenses no longer being issued, and that state's lottery system and racetracks unavailable. Minnesota's 84 major rest areas along highways were closed. Thousands of state employees were expected to be sent home without pay, and contractors were to be told to walk away from hundreds of road construction projects already underway."
From Fukushima to Disarmament
http://www.truth-out.org/fukushima-disarmament/1309544740
Malcolm Fraser, Project Syndicate: "Months after the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, the ongoing nuclear disaster at Fukushima compounds the humanitarian tragedy and impedes recovery. The damaged reactors and spent-fuel ponds contain around ten times as much nuclear fuel as did the Chernobyl reactor that exploded in 1986. In three reactors, the fuel has melted, almost certainly through the reactor vessels; primary containment structures have been breached; explosions have torn away the secondary containment (the buildings); radioactive releases continue; and closed-loop cooling has not been re-established."
New York Proposes Permanent Ban on Fracking Near Watershed and State Land
http://www.truth-out.org/new-york-proposes-permanent-ban-fracking-near-watershed-and-state-land/1309526397
Nicholas Kusnetz, ProPublica: "The New York Times reported [yesterday] that New York's Gov. Andrew Cuomo is planning to lift a 'ban' on hydraulic fracturing. But whatever the governor announces tomorrow, it's unlikely to change the de facto moratorium on drilling in the state that began nearly three years ago, when the state committed to a fresh environmental review. New York Department of Environment Conservation officials have repeatedly said they cannot issue any new drilling permits until the state completes the environmental review, ordered in 2008 by Cuomo's predecessor, David Paterson."
Labor Wars: Michigan Is the New Wisconsin
http://www.truth-out.org/labor-wars-michigan-new-wisconsin/1309535902
Akiba Solomon, Colorlines.com: "Michigan is shaping up to be the next big battleground in the Republican-led war on unions and public workers' rights. In March, the state's Republican governor Rick Snyder signed Emergency Financial Manager Law Public Act 4, a law that grants state-appointed officials broad power to run cash-strapped communities and school districts. While the state has had Emergency Financial Managers (EFM's) for decades, critics - including Jesse Jackson, Rep. John Conyers and members of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus - say PA-4 has enhanced their authority in unprecedented ways."
A Conversation With Eco-Outlaw Diane Wilson
http://www.truth-out.org/conversation-eco-outlaw-diane-wilson/1309531677
Joni Praded, Truthout: "Renegade activist and Texas shrimper Diane Wilson was arrested in London on April 14, 2011, while protesting outside BP's annual meeting. Wilson, who successfully fought Formosa Plastics to keep them from dumping toxins in the bay near her home and chained herself to an oxide tower to protest Dow Chemical's refusal to take responsibility for Bhopal, was attempting to enter the meeting and present BP directors with a Black Planet Award (begun in 2006 by a grassroots group in Germany to call attention to the world's worst polluters) when she was taken into custody. Wilson recently spoke with Chelsea Green's editorial director, Joni Praded, about her latest book."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
Did you know that some of America's infrastructure is being repaired after all?
The only catch is that major parts of the work are being done in China, meaning that many US construction workers stay unemployed.
Take for instance the massive $7.2 billion project to rebuild the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which was compromised by earthquake damage.
The New York Times reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/26/business/global/26bridge.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp) about a surge of construction employment on American projects such as the bridge, in China:
"At a sprawling manufacturing complex here, hundreds of Chinese laborers are now completing work on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
"Next month, the last four of more than two dozen giant steel modules - each with a roadbed segment about half the size of a football field - will be loaded onto a huge ship and transported 6,500 miles to Oakland. There, they will be assembled to fit into the eastern span of the new Bay Bridge.
"The project is part of China's continual move up the global economic value chain - from cheap toys to Apple iPads to commercial jetliners - as it aims to become the world's civil engineer."
Across the United States, Chinese workers are rebuilding America, according to the Times, "In New York City alone, Chinese companies have won contracts to help renovate the subway system, refurbish the Alexander Hamilton Bridge over the Harlem River and build a new Metro-North train platform near Yankee Stadium."
While Congress dithers over a rebuild America program to employ US workers, the Chinese are getting the jobs.
Can you imagine the Brooklyn Bridge having been made in China?
It might very well have been were it constructed in 2011.
