t r u t h o u t | Five years ago this month, I broke my own story. I published a memoir titled "News Junkie," a brutally honest book in which I wrote about the demons I had spent much of my life battling, my passion for investigative journalism, and how the former shaped the latter when I began my career. While there are many underlying themes to "News Junkie," there is one in particular I want to share with you. *It's about my relationship with the independent media, and it rings as true today as it did back in 2006:*

One has power and audience, the other, passion and stories the mainstream media find unsuitable for a megacorporate entity to print...The indie media are largely composed of hardcore journalists who care about the substance of their stories, and are actually excited about pissing off the same people who intimidate the mainstream media salarymen."" Over the past year, my colleagues at Truthout and I have broken numerous stories that the mainstream media found "unsuitable" for publication or follow-up. Just last week, we published an explosive story [ http://www.truth-out.org/new-documents-claim-intelligence-bin-laden-al-qaeda-targets-withheld-congress-911-probe/1307986777 ] I co-authored that revealed new details about a secret military intelligence unit and the hunt for Osama bin Laden prior to the attacks on 9/11.
*While many reporters in the mainstream media depend heavily on access to government officials and are unwilling to put those relationships at risk by chasing stories like the ones we have been publishing at Truthout, we continue to fly the flag of muckrakers like I.F. Stone, Ida Tarbell and George Seldes.*
