t r u t h o u t | Truthout is a public charity. By definition, we serve you - not the government, not the big corporations, not the monolithic, anonymous powers that determine what reaches the mainstream airwaves, and what doesn't. That's why we can publish courageous reporting: with no corporate funding, no advertising and no profit motive, we have no constraints on our ability to hold power accountable. That's also why we must ask the people we serve to sustain us. We need your help today in order to meet our budget. We have $28,000 to go - can you support Truthout and help us meet our goal by Friday?

William Rivers Pitt | Blood on the Chopping Block
http://www.truth-out.org/blood-chopping-block/1308594576
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "As it stands today, virtually every important swing state in the union is either up for grabs or leaning heavily towards the Democrats, and all thanks to the Ryan Medicare plan and the resulting embrace of that plan by the GOP. There are even Tea Party members, highly influential ones, who see blood on the moon for Republicans if matters continue as they have. South Florida Tea Party chairman Everett Wilkinson fired off an email last Thursday describing the Ryan Plan as a disaster in the making. Such is the power of Medicare, one of the best and most critically helpful government programs ever devised. Medicare, as everyone knows, is focused on offering federal assistance to older Americans, which makes it a massive political hand grenade; right now, the ranks of retired and elderly persons are swelling in a way never seen in this country before, as millions of Baby Boomers reach retirement age."

Introducing Ladydrawers!
http://www.truth-out.org/lady-drawers/1308413043
In recent years, comics have grown into a legitimate - and big money - business. Yet, some in the industry haven't felt the impact of the popular success of the now ubiquitous form. More often than not, it's the female-identified creators who aren't being encouraged to submit work, aren't being sought out and aren't getting books turned into big movie deals. In comics and elsewhere, women creators of all sorts of media are starting to ask: Why? Ladydrawers, a new semimonthly comics collaboration on Truthout, will look at a few possible reasons and impacts in comics form.

Organizing on Wobbly Ground: Learning From "Solidarity Unionism at Starbucks"
http://www.truth-out.org/organizing-wobbly-ground-learning-solidarity-unionism-starbucks/1308684065
Adam Kader, Working In These Times: "The decline of unions does not mean the end of the labor movement. Indeed, the last few years have seen a proliferation of new kinds of worker organizations and workers' rights campaigns. Some of the most exciting of late have been conducted by community-based groups (rather than workplace-based unions), such as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and those part of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. In Solidarity Unionism at Starbucks, a recent pamphlet published by PM Press, Daniel Gross and Staughton Lynd highlight an increasingly important feature of today's labor movement - nonunion workers using direct action strategies protected by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) - while examining the Industrial Workers of the World's (IWW)'s ongoing efforts to organize Starbucks."

"Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future"
http://www.truth-out.org/aftershock-next-economy-and-americas-future-eccless-insight/1308588325
An excerpt from Truthout's Progressive Pick of the Week, Robert Reich's "Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future": "The Federal Reserve Board, arguably the most powerful group of economic decision-makers in the world, is housed in the Eccles Building on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C. A long, white, mausoleum-like structure, the building is named after Marriner Eccles, who chaired the Board from November 1934 until April 1948. These were crucial years in the history of the American economy, and the world's. While Eccles is largely forgotten today, he offered critical insight into the great pendulum of American capitalism. His analysis of the underlying economic stresses of the Great Depression is extraordinarily, even eerily, relevant to the Crash of 2008. It also offers if not a blueprint for the future, at least a suggestion of what to expect in the coming years."

Clarence Thomas Decided Three Cases Where AEI Filed a Brief After AEI Gave Him a $15,000 Gift
http://www.truth-out.org/clarence-thomas-decided-three-cases-where-aei-filed-brief-after-aei-gave-him-15000-gift/1308668882
Ian Millhiser, ThinkProgress: "In 2001, a conservative, corporate-aligned think tank called the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) gave Justice Clarence Thomas the gift of a $15,000 bust of Abraham Lincoln. At the ceremony presenting Thomas with this very expensive gift, AEI president Christopher DeMuth explained that the bust was 'cast in 1914 by the great neo-classical sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman.' AEI, however, is not simply in the business of giving luxurious gifts to Supreme Court justices - it is also in the business of litigating before the United States Supreme Court. ThinkProgress uncovered three briefs that AEI filed in Thomas' Court after Thomas received their $15,000 gift."

Attacking Libya - and the Dictionary
http://www.truth-out.org/attacking-libya-and-dictionary/1308664582
Jonathan Schell, TomDispatch: "The Obama administration has come up with a remarkable justification for going to war against Libya without the congressional approval required by the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973. American planes are taking off, they are entering Libyan air space, they are locating targets, they are dropping bombs, and the bombs are killing and injuring people and destroying things. It is war. Some say it is a good war and some say it is a bad war, but surely it is a war. Nonetheless, the Obama administration insists it is not a war."

Obama to Announce Plans for Afghan Surge Pullout
http://www.truth-out.org/obama-announce-plans-afghan-surge-pullout/1308663774
Helene Cooper and Mark Landler, The New York Times News Service: "President Obama plans to announce his decision on the scale and pace of troop withdrawals from Afghanistan in a speech on Wednesday evening, an administration official said Monday. As he closes in on a decision, another official said, Mr. Obama is considering options that range from a Pentagon-backed proposal to pull out only 5,000 troops this year to an aggressive plan to withdraw within 12 months all 30,000 troops the United States deployed to Afghanistan as part of the surge in December 2009. Under another option, a third official said, Mr. Obama would announce a final date for the withdrawal of all the surge forces sometime in 2012, but leave the timetable for incremental reductions up to commanders in the field - much as he did in drawing down troops after the surge in Iraq."

US Mayors Call for End to Wars and Nuclear Weapons
http://www.truth-out.org/us-mayors-call-end-wars-and-nuclear-weapons/1308677269
James Russell, Truthout: "Peace activists won a major victory on Monday, June 20, when the US Conference of Mayors voted to adopt two resolutions that call for a drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and the abolition of nuclear weapons. Both resolutions also demand the reprioritization of defense spending, including the $126 billion spent each year in Iraq and Afghanistan, toward the needs of municipalities. The group, which represents mayors of municipalities with 30,000 or more residents, has not passed such a resolution in 40 years. While the antiwar resolution was subject to vote after a contentious proposal to pull it, the nuclear weapons resolution passed unanimously, according to observers."

Source of Missing Jobs in America Found: Forced Laborers
http://www.truth-out.org/source-missing-jobs-america-found-forced-laborers/1308681133
Maryam Al-Zoubi, Campaign for America's Future: "With unemployment at a near historic high in the United States, could you imagine any American company bringing in foreign workers to work for them below the minimum wage and with no benefits? Most people would say no. But can you imagine those same Americans forcing foreign workers to stay here, with no pay, and constant abuse? That is actually happening in this country today. Forced labor is a real phenomenon in the United States agriculture business. Without awareness and investigation into where our supplies come from and who businesses are hiring, the American people become unwitting complicit supporters of labor trafficking. Monday June 13th, in anticipation of the reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA), U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-04) held a Senate committee hearing and panel discussion to review the success and needed improvements of the law."

Florida Governor Scott Rejects Million in Federal Health Aid for Those in Need to Grandstand Against Health Law
http://www.truth-out.org/florida-governor-scott-rejects-million-federal-health-aid-those-need-grandstand-against-health-law/1
Marie Diamond, ThinkProgress: "In his relentless campaign against President Obama's health care reform law, Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has repeatedly proven his willingness to put politics ahead of the welfare of his state's residents. While other Republican governors have joined in opposition to the Affordable Care Act, most have forged ahead with implementing the reforms and accepted the federal money that comes with it as that is the law, until their suit against the legislation is settled in court. But the St. Petersburg Times reports that Scott has taken a different tact, ignoring the law by rejecting millions in federal health aid for senior citizens, children, and the disabled just to spite the president and score political points with the far right."

Paul Krugman | Canada May Have the Cure for US's Medicare Ailment
http://www.truth-out.org/canada-may-have-cure-us-medicares-ailment/1308663144
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "I keep hearing people say that Medicare in its current form is not sustainable in the United States, as if that were an established fact. It's anything but. What is Medicare? It's single-payer coverage for the elderly. Other countries have single-payer systems that are much cheaper than ours - and also much cheaper than private insurance in America. So there's nothing about the form that makes Medicare unsustainable, unless you think that health care itself is unsustainable. Of course, what the people who say things like 'Medicare is unsustainable' usually mean is that it must be privatized, converted into a voucher system, or whatever. The thing is, none of those changes would make the system more efficient - on the contrary."

Open Lands, Closed Books
http://www.truth-out.org/open-lands-closed-books/1308667796
Kevin Kiley, Inside Higher Ed: "A series of reports by the Oakland Institute charge that several prominent American universities - including Harvard and Vanderbilt Universities and Spelman College - are investing in hedge funds and companies that are driving African farmers off their land. The California-based think tank, which focuses on social, economic and environmental issues, is producing a series of reports on how Western entities are investing in land in Africa and the effects of those investments. In the reports, the institute alleges that these investments are increasing price volatility and supply insecurity in the global food chain, and not returning to African nations the benefits that were promised. The main link the reports establish between Harvard, Vanderbilt and Spelman and land development in Africa is a London-based hedge fund called Emergent Asset Management."

TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES

Maybe Michele Bachmann's historical inaccuracies are insignificant to her because such minor facts pale in the shadow of her divine mission.

After all, Bachmann graduated from Oral Roberts Law School, which eventually closed and transferred its library to Pat Robertson's Regent Law School. The Regent Law School Review provides an insight into Bachmann's view on law - and history: "Regent University Law Review seeks to present academically excellent scholarship on relevant issues facing the legal community today from the perspective of a historic Christian worldview. It is committed to a jurisprudence based upon a Higher Law; that is, law based upon the Law of God." (http://www.regent.edu/acad/schlaw/student_life/studentorgs/lawreview/home.cfm )

That is why Bachmann, Palin, and others seem to make whatever they want of the Constitution, our legal system and legal precedent. The foundation for the US rule of law in their minds is secondary to whatever might be their interpretation of a "higher law."

Of course, that puts Bachmann in pretty divinely inspired company. According to the Regent Law Review, "Past contributors include United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, Judge Edith H. Jones, Attorney General Edwin Meese III, Robert P. George, George Allen, Charles W. Colson, Charles E. Rice, Phillip E. Johnson, David Barton, Nancy R. Pearcey, and James Bopp."

Proclaiming that God is guiding a person's destiny allows one to feel indifferent to factual accuracy.

According to Christian extremists such as Bachmann, the Good Lord can't be bothered with facts. "He's" too busy putting the final touches on Armageddon and making sure that no gays accidentally get into heaven.

<font><strong>Source of Missing Jobs in America Found: Forced Laborers</str=
ong></font><br />
Maryam Al-Zoubi, Campaign for America's Future: "With unemployment at a nea=
r historic high in the United States, could you imagine any American compan=
y bringing in foreign workers to work for them below the minimum wage and w=
ith no benefits? Most people would say no. But can you imagine those same A=
mericans forcing foreign workers to stay here, with no pay, and constant ab=
use? That is actually happening in this country today. Forced labor is a re=
al phenomenon in the United States agriculture business. Without awareness =
and investigation into where our supplies come from and who businesses are =
hiring, the American people become unwitting complicit supporters of labor =
trafficking. Monday June 13th, in anticipation of the reauthorization of th=
e Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA), U.S. Rep. Chris Smith =
(NJ-04) held a Senate committee hearing and panel discussion to review the =
success and needed improvements of the law." <br />

<font><strong>Florida Governor Scott Rejects Million in Federal Health Aid =
for Those in Need to Grandstand Against Health Law</strong></font><br />
Marie Diamond, ThinkProgress: "In his relentless campaign against President=
Obama's health care reform law, Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has repeat=
edly proven his willingness to put politics ahead of the welfare of his sta=
te's residents. While other Republican governors have joined in opposition =
to the Affordable Care Act, most have forged ahead with implementing the re=
forms and accepted the federal money that comes with it as that is the law,=
until their suit against the legislation is settled in court. But the St. =
Petersburg Times reports that Scott has taken a different tact, ignoring th=
e law by rejecting millions in federal health aid for senior citizens, chil=
dren, and the disabled just to spite the president and score political poin=
ts with the far right."<br />

<font><strong>Paul Krugman | Canada May Have the Cure for US's Medicare Ail=
ment</strong></font><br />
Paul Krugman, Krugman &amp; Co.: "I keep hearing people say that Medicare i=
n its current form is not sustainable in the United States, as if that were=
an established fact. It's anything but. What is Medicare? It's single-paye=
r coverage for the elderly. Other countries have single-payer systems that =
are much cheaper than ours - and also much cheaper than private insurance i=
n America. So there's nothing about the form that makes Medicare unsustaina=
ble, unless you think that health care itself is unsustainable. Of course, =
what the people who say things like 'Medicare is unsustainable' usually mea=
n is that it must be privatized, converted into a voucher system, or whatev=
er. The thing is, none of those changes would make the system more efficien=
t - on the contrary."<br />

<font><strong>Open Lands, Closed Books</strong></font><br />
Kevin Kiley, Inside Higher Ed: "A series of reports by the Oakland Institut=

nd Vanderbilt Universities and Spelman College - are investing in hedge fun=
ds and companies that are driving African farmers off their land. The Calif=
ornia-based think tank, which focuses on social, economic and environmental=
issues, is producing a series of reports on how Western entities are inves=
ting in land in Africa and the effects of those investments. In the reports=
, the institute alleges that these investments are increasing price volatil=

rican nations the benefits that were promised. The main link the reports es=

<p><em>Maybe Michele Bachmann's historical inaccuracies are insignificant t=
o her because such minor facts pale in the shadow of her divine mission.</e=
m></p>
<p><em>
<p>After all, Bachmann graduated from Oral Roberts Law School, which eventu=
ally closed and transferred its library to Pat Robertson's Regent Law Schoo=
l. The Regent Law School Review provides an insight into Bachmann's view on=
law - and history: "Regent University Law Review seeks to present academic=
ally excellent scholarship on relevant issues facing the legal community to=
day from the perspective of a historic Christian worldview. It is committed=
to a jurisprudence based upon a Higher Law; that is, <a href=3D"http://org=
2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=3D2&c=3Dj1TWgVaZTXCeQOP%2B%2BNqFE2A=
i4H636lMU"><font color=3D"#cc0000">law based upon the Law of God</font></a>=
."</p>
<p>That is why Bachmann, Palin, and others seem to make whatever they want =
of the Constitution, our legal system and legal precedent. The foundation f=
or the US rule of law in their minds is secondary to whatever might be thei=
r interpretation of a "higher law."</p>
<p>Of course, that puts Bachmann in pretty divinely inspired company. Accor=
ding to the Regent Law Review, "Past contributors include United States Sup=
reme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, Judg=
e Edith H. Jones, Attorney General Edwin Meese III, Robert P. George, Georg=
e Allen, Charles W. Colson, Charles E. Rice, Phillip E. Johnson, David Bart=
on, Nancy R. Pearcey, and James Bopp."</p>
<p>Proclaiming that God is guiding a person's destiny allows one to feel in=
different to factual accuracy.</p>
<p>According to Christian extremists such as Bachmann, the Good Lord can't =
be bothered with facts. "He's" too busy putting the final touches on Armage=
ddon and making sure that no gays accidentally get into heaven.</p>
