In today's lead story, Truthout's Henry Giroux writes [ http://www.truth-out.org/reveling-pain-others-moral-degeneracy-and-violence-kill-team-photos/1308333080 ] of the "death drive in American society," showing how currents of amorality, violence and aggression now dominate our country's politics and culture, spilling over into our daily lives. These currents are propelled by a media environment where giant 3D movie screens regularly depict the most gruesome acts for pleasure, and conservative radio and TV hosts attack public employees, immigrants and the poor with violent metaphors at every turn.
Giroux writes, *"Whatever bleeds - now gratuitously and luxuriously - brings in box office profits and dominates media headlines."* Our airwaves breed violence, and violence breeds more violence - but violence makes money. And in a media climate where profit rules all, the death drive will dominate as long as it's still bringing in the cash.
That's why it's crucial to nurture the few pockets of our shared culture that are not driven by profit.
