t r u t h o u t | At the Netroots Nation conference this past weekend, love warrior Van Jones took to the stage (http://www.truth-out.org/van-jones-we-are-deep-patriots/1308577992) to challenge progressives to build a movement based not on party affiliation or on a charismatic leader, but instead, on the moral values we all share: real liberty, justice and compassion for all. Jones channeled the disappointment and heartbreak so many on the left have been feeling, and laid out the dream of a truly different future. Truthout will join this movement, full force. We will continue to bring information to the people who value honest reporting and analysis, along with the ideas, information and inspiration they need to get involved. Help us do this work and grow this movement. Help us sustain our budget and be as effective as we can possibly be, by making a tax-deductible contribution to Truthout today.

http://www.truth-out.org/reveling-pain-others-moral-degeneracy-and-violence-kill-team-photos/1308333080
Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "War, violence and death have become the organizing principle of governance and culture in the United States as we move into the second decade of the 21st century. Lacking a language for the social good, the very concept of the social as a space in which justice, equality, social protections and a responsibility to the other mediate everyday life is being refigured through a spectacle of violence and cruelty. Under such circumstances, ethical considerations and social costs are removed from market-driven policies and values just as images of human suffering are increasingly abstracted from not only their social and political contexts, but also the conditions that make such suffering possible. Moreover, as public issues collapse into privatized considerations, matters of agency, responsibility and ethics are now framed within the discourse of extreme individualism."
Chris Hedges | This Hero Didn't Stand a Chance
http://www.truth-out.org/hero-didnt-stand-chance/1308576124
Chris Hedges, Truthdig: "Tim DeChristopher is scheduled to be sentenced in a Salt Lake City courtroom by U.S. District Judge Dee Benson on July 26. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $750,000 fine for fraudulently bidding in December 2008 on parcels of land, including areas around eastern Utah's national parks, which were being sold off by the Bush administration to the oil and natural gas industry. As Bidder No. 70, he drove up the prices of some of the bids and won more than a dozen other parcels for $1.8 million. The government is asking Judge Benson to send DeChristopher to prison for four and a half years. His prosecution is evidence that our moral order has been turned upside down."
Supreme Court Rules for Wal-Mart in Sex Discrimination Suit
http://www.truth-out.org/supreme-court-rules-wal-mart-sex-discrimination-suit/1308582328
Michael Doyle, McClatchy Newspapers: "The Supreme Court on Monday ruled a massive class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart goes too far, handing business a major legal victory. Though divided in some ways, justices unanimously agreed that the sex discrimination lawsuit filed on behalf of 1.5 million female Wal-Mart employees swept in too many unrelated people. The ruling will constrain future class-action suits as well."
News in Brief: Workers in Canada Striking, and More ...
http://www.truth-out.org/news-brief-workers-canada-striking-and-more/1308593235
Air Canada employees in Canada are returning to work Monday after the union representing its customer service staff reached a deal with the airline, but Canada Post employees will not; federal regulators have kept aging nuclear reactors technically sound for operation by repeatedly lowering the safety standards; human rights activist Cipriana Jurado, who worked for the Center for Investigation and Worker Solidarity in Juarez, Mexico, investigating stories from locals who said the Mexican military had abducted, tortured and sometimes murdered their family members, on Friday received political asylum in the US.
Business as Usual on Steroids
http://www.truth-out.org/business-usual-steroids/1308576546
Karen J. Greenberg, TomDispatch: "In the seven weeks since the killing of Osama bin Laden, pundits and experts of many stripes have concluded that his death represents a marker of genuine significance in the story of America's encounter with terrorism. Peter Bergen, a bin Laden expert, ... wrote, 'Killing bin Laden is the end of the war on terror.'... We can just sort of announce that right now.' Yet you wouldn't know it in Washington where, if anything, the Obama administration and Congress have interpreted the killing of al-Qaeda's leader as a virtual license to double down on every 'front' in the war on terror."
Justices Have Been Forced to Resign for Doing What Clarence Thomas Has Done
http://www.truth-out.org/justices-have-been-forced-resign-doing-what-clarence-thomas-has-done/1308576677
Ian Millhiser, ThinkProgress: "Justice Clarence Thomas is an ethics problem in a black robe. Just eight months after ThinkProgress broke the story of Thomas' attendance at a Koch-sponsored political fundraiser, we learn that Thomas doesn't just do unethical favors for wealthy right-wing donors - they also do expensive favors for him. Leading conservative donor Harlan Crow, whose company often litigates in federal court, donated $500,000 to allow Thomas's wife to start a Tea Party group and he once gave Thomas a $19,000 Bible that belonged to Frederick Douglass. The American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank which frequently files briefs in Thomas' Court, also gave Thomas a $15,000 gift. If this sounds familiar, it's because America has seen this movie before. Indeed, the Thomas scandal is little more than a remake of the forty year-old gifting scandal that brought down Justice Abe Fortas."
Dean Baker | The Endgame on the Debt Ceiling
http://www.truth-out.org/endgame-debt-ceiling/1308576216
Dean Baker, Truthout: "As we know, President Obama and his team do not appear to be very effective negotiators when it comes to dealing with the Republicans in Congress. Last December, the Republicans forced the president to renew the Bush tax cuts for the rich. More recently, they got him to make $38 billion in cuts to the 2011 budget even though all his economists know that the economy actually needs more stimulus, which more means spending. Since the president is having so much trouble dealing with the Republicans, the rest of us should lend him a hand. One way we can do this is by etching out what the end game looks like in the battle over raising the debt ceiling."
Progressive Defense of Weiner Overlooks His Right-Wing Foreign Policy
http://www.truth-out.org/progressive-defense-weiner-overlooks-his-right-wing-foreign-policy/1308331221
Stephen Zunes, Truthout: "A surprising number of progressives have been expressing regret at the resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-New York) over the 'sexting' scandal, correctly noting how the grossly inflated media coverage has distracted from far more pressing issues, as well as the far worse sins (mostly not involving sex) committed by Republican lawmakers. What is disturbing, however, is the way Weiner is being treated as if he was a leading progressive voice on Capitol Hill despite his decidedly right-wing political agenda, particularly on foreign policy."
India's Hawks: Emulate Bin Laden Killing
http://www.truth-out.org/indias-hawks-emulate-bin-laden-killing/1308233265
J. Sri Raman, Truthout: "Much has been written about what the killing of Osama bin Laden on May 2 can mean for Pakistan-US relations.... One of the very first questions raised in India by the US Navy Sea, Air and Land (SEAL) team was whether this was or was not an example for this country to emulate. 'Yes,' said India's extreme right and the security 'experts' that give its rhetoric some respectability. They continue their campaign for a similar operation or series of operations from New Delhi to eliminate sources of anti-India terrorism seen to be harbored on Pakistani soil."
Spain's Challenge to Austerity
http://www.truth-out.org/spains-challenge-austerity/1308584620
Danny Schechter, Consortium News: "It's been a month now since Real Democracy Now!, a grassroots 'platform,' began a march that initially attracted only a relative handful of activists. However, by the time it reached the shopping district at Puerta del Sol, it had swelled to over 25,000, surprising its organizers, participants and politicians from the two major parties. This march turned into a movement when many of its supporters decided to stay in the square, no doubt inspired by events in Egypt."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES
When Chris Wallace of Fox interviewed Jon Stewart over the weekend, he thought he was scoring a point when he bragged that Fox "news" viewers love the network. Stewart, always quick on the draw, responded that although this may be true, study after study shows that Fox viewers are the most misinformed on television.
BuzzFlash at Truthout encounters this constantly in comments and emails that we receive in response to the BuzzFlash blog columns. Fox viewers often base their statements on Fox "manufactured facts" that are simply not true.
One of these points is that big government is strangling small businesses, which are the backbone of the American economy. But the reality is that large corporations, particularly American-based global corporations, are slowly killing many small businesses, as we have noted before.
Think of small businesses that used to be in abundance: for example, hardware stores, pharmacies, appliance stores and shoe stores, among others.
Now, we have all these small businesses forced into closure by national and international corporations. The inherent goal of corporations is to eliminate the competition, and large companies have done just that by shuttering many small businesses through massive buying power, branding, predatory pricing and marketing.
In turn, these corporations accumulate large amounts of capital and profits, which are then used to yield political power in DC and state capitols, and to expand so that the middle class of ex-small business owners are forced to become low-wage workers at chain stores.
As the Portland Business Journal reports (http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/print-edition/2011/06/17/big-businesses-continue-growing.html),
"'Corporate profits may be at a record high, but businesses on Main Street are still scraping by,' said NFIB [National Federation of Independent Business] Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. 'Washington is throwing misdirected policies at the problem, offering tax breaks for hiring and equipment investment, but acting surprised when they don't bear any fruit.'"
So, the Fox viewers watch and listen to propaganda that the federal government is killing small businesses, when it is policies that benefit large corporations that are facilitating the decline of family-run operations.
The Fox fan who excoriates liberals for alleged anti-small business policies no doubt gets his/her hardware supplies from Home Depot, prescriptions from CVS, and appliances and computers from Best Buy, for example.
It makes you wonder how much cognitive dissonance one person can keep inside his/her head before it explodes from the factual contradictions.

<p>When Chris Wallace of Fox interviewed Jon Stewart over the weekend, he t=
hought he was scoring a point when he bragged that Fox "news" viewers love =
the network. Stewart, always quick on the draw, responded that although thi=
s may be true, study after study shows that Fox viewers are the most misinf=
ormed on television.</p>
<p>BuzzFlash at Truthout encounters this constantly in comments and emails =
that we receive in response to the BuzzFlash blog columns. Fox viewers ofte=
n base their statements on Fox "manufactured facts" that are simply not tru=
e.</p>
<p>One of these points is that big government is strangling small businesse=
s, which are the backbone of the American economy. But the reality is that =
large corporations, particularly American-based global corporations, are sl=
owly killing many small businesses, as we have noted before.</p>
<p>Think of small businesses that used to be in abundance: for example, har=
dware stores, pharmacies, appliance stores and shoe stores, among others.</=
p>
<p>Now, we have all these small businesses forced into closure by national =
and international corporations. The inherent goal of corporations is to eli=
minate the competition, and large companies have done just that by shutteri=
ng many small businesses through massive buying power, branding, predatory =
pricing and marketing.</p>
<p>In turn, these corporations accumulate large amounts of capital and prof=
its, which are then used to yield political power in DC and state capitols,=
and to expand so that the middle class of ex-small business owners are for=
ced to become low-wage workers at chain stores.</p>
<p>As the <a href=3D"http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=3D2&=
c=3DZfXq4MJUtSvj6GPqvHaaAJw5xo7aUvR1"><font color=3D"#cc0000">Portland Busi=
ness Journal reports</font></a>,</p>
<blockquote>
<p>"Corporate profits may be at a record high, but businesses on Main Stree=
t are still scraping by," said NFIB [National Federation of Independent Bus=
iness] Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. "Washington is throwing misdirected=
policies at the problem, offering tax breaks for hiring and equipment inve=
stment, but acting surprised when they don't bear any fruit."</p>
</blockquote>
<p>So, the Fox viewers watch and listen to propaganda that the federal gove=
rnment is killing small businesses, when it is policies that benefit large =
corporations that are facilitating the decline of family-run operations.</p=
>
<p>The Fox fan who excoriates liberals for alleged anti-small business poli=
cies no doubt gets his/her hardware supplies from Home Depot, prescriptions=
from CVS, and appliances and computers from Best Buy, for example.</p>
<p>It makes you wonder how much cognitive dissonance one person can keep in=
side his/her head before it explodes from the factual contradictions.</p>
