t r u t h o u t | In a world where the phrase "environmental news coverage" conjures up images of talking heads jabbering around the edges of the global warming "question" on cable TV, Truthout has always taken the road less traveled. These days, that road is a difficult one to tread. It's paved with the entrails of corporate exploitation, poisoning our air, land and water - and sprinkling the poison with a "green" spin for good measure.
*Yet, in the past year, Truthout has proven that hard-nosed environmental muckraking - unraveling the corporate lies and stringing together the reality - is alive and kicking.* We exposed the ongoing destructive practices of BP in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, revealing widespread worker exploitation and blowing the whistle on the large-scale dangers posed by other drilling rigs. We've followed the creeping proliferation of genetically engineered foods, as well as the collusion between government regulators and corporate crop giant Monsanto [ http://www.truth-out.org/why-monsanto-always-wins67976 ].
And just last week, our environmental fellow Mike Ludwig broke the story of a battle in Washington State [ http://www.truth-out.org/pesticides-and-politics-americas-eco-war/1307539754 ] between small organic farmers and government agencies that are spraying of vast quantities of pesticides, declaring war on so-called "invasive species" and hiding under the guise of "conservation." This story, the result of a six-month investigation, depicts a conflict that is symptomatic of a larger contagion: the mingling of the biotech industry, corporate greed, government pressure and "conservationism." *Truthout not only exposed this terrifying eco-war, but also dug into the details and history behind its spread, providing the much-needed context for future progressive action.*
