I first came to Truthout nearly a decade ago, as I turned to the Internet for news, driven by my growing frustration with the major media outlets' lack of quality and depth of reporting.
I wanted more than quick talking points and chit-chatty commentaries. I was tired of news programing where people from "opposite" sides of an issue angrily shouted opinions at one another. It didn't seem to matter if one of their arguments was deeply flawed or even wrong. Nobody was asking the important questions. They called it balance.
Instead, I wanted to read strong arguments and progressive ideas, to be able to separate the deep seated truths from speculation, sensationalism, half-truths and distortions. I wanted reporters to once again ask the hard questions, to stay with the story over time.
Today, as a member of the Truthout staff, I work each day with staff and writers who take their role in journalism seriously. They spend the time and energy to dig deeply into topics of real importance. They seek out authentic voices to speak to issues often forgotten or ignored by mainstream media. They ask the tough questions.
