t r u t h o u t | There's a lot of glad-handing and self-congratulations in the traditional media and among so-called "democracy experts" about our First Amendment rights in this country. The "free press" will continue to chase down fake stories about serial killers (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2011/06/psychics-tip-touches-off-mass-murder-media-frenzy/38618/) instead of dissecting the mass slaughter of Americans who can't obtain health insurance. But with your help, Truthout will continue to breathe life into the fourth estate of government. Help us keep our budget funded - we can't do it without your support.

Ex-Spy Alleges Bush White House Sought to Discredit Juan Cole
http://www.truth-out.org/ex-spy-alleges-bush-white-house-sought-discredit-juan-cole/1308234734
James Risen, The New York Times News Service: "A former senior C.I.A. official says that officials in the Bush White House sought damaging personal information on a prominent American critic of the Iraq war in order to discredit him. Glenn L. Carle, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer who was a top counterterrorism official during the administration of President George W. Bush, said the White House at least twice asked intelligence officials to gather sensitive information on Juan Cole, a University of Michigan professor who writes an influential blog that criticized the war."

"Merchants of Doubt": How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues From Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming
http://www.truth-out.org/merchants-doubt-how-handful-scientists-obscured-truth-issues-tobacco-smoke-global-warming/1308235932
Truthout's Progressive Pick of the Week: "Merchants of Doubt," by authors Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, exposes how radical think tanks have created a cadre of scientists - motivated by money and ideology - to debunk established scientific facts on threats such as DDT, tobacco, nuclear weapons and global warming.

Medicaid Makes a Difference
http://www.truth-out.org/medicaid-makes-difference/1308151495
LeeAnn Hall, Truthout: "A little more than a year ago, 11-year-old Marcelas Owens stood next to President Obama for the signing of federal health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. A grassroots leader with the Washington Community Action Network, Marcelas had fought hard for the bill, telling his family's story to senators, national reporters and people gathered at rallies in support of reform. His story is tough, but all too common: when he was only seven, his mother died because she was uninsured and couldn't get treatment for her pulmonary hypertension."

News in Brief: Manning Supporter Silent Before Grand Jury, and More ...
http://www.truth-out.org/news-brief-manning-supporter-silent-grand-jury-and-more/1308237294
David House, a computer expert and Bradley Manning supporter, evoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer any questions beyond providing his name and address before a federal grand jury in Arlington, Virginia, yesterday; a group of ten members of Congress filed a lawsuit against the Obama administration yesterday over US military activities in Libya; after years of community and activist opposition, the government of Peru has revoked a permit for a massive dam in a major Amazonian tributary; Wisconsin loves beer and has a growing microbrew industry, but provisions in Walker's budget will prevent small brewers from selling directly to liquor stores, restaurants and their own customers.

Paul Krugman | The Euro Zone, Edging Ever Closer to Complete Meltdown
http://www.truth-out.org/euro-zone-edging-ever-closer-complete-meltdown/1308229580
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "Martin Wolf, an economics commentator at The Financial Times wrote a very important column recently on the tough choices facing countries in the euro zone. 'The euro zone, as designed, has failed,' Mr. Wolf wrote on May 31. 'It was based on a set of principles that have proved unworkable at the first contact with a financial and fiscal crisis.'"

Weiner Quits House Seat Over "Mistakes"
http://www.truth-out.org/weiner-quits-house-seat-over-mistakes/1308252310
Raymond Hernandez, The New York Times News Service: "Representative Anthony D. Weiner, an influential Democrat who had been considered a leading candidate to be the next mayor of New York City, said Thursday that he was resigning from Congress following revelations of lewd online exchanges with several women."

US Neocons' New Overtures to Iran's MKO Recall History of Resistance and Co-Opting: Part 1
http://www.truth-out.org/us-neocons-new-overtures-irans-mko-recall-history-resistance-and-co-opting-part-1/1307727437
Muhammad Sahimi, Truthout: "Ever since the Islamic revolution of February 1979 in Iran that toppled the pro-United States dictatorship of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran has been at the forefront of news in the Western world, and in particular in the United States. The hostage crisis of November 1979 to January 1981, during which 53 Americans were held hostage after Islamic leftist students had overrun the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, created permanent scars in the American people's conscience and pride. The Iran-Iraq war from September 1980 to July 1988, which began when Saddam Hussein ordered his army to invade Iran after being encouraged and supported by the US, kept Iran in the news. When moderate reformist Mohammad Khatami won Iran's presidential election in a landslide in May 1997 and again in June 2001, there was hope that the US-Iran relations would gradually improve."

Greek Government in Turmoil Over Austerity Measures
http://www.truth-out.org/greek-government-turmoil-over-austerity-measures/1308249576
Rachel Donadio and Niki Kitsantonis, The New York Times News Service: "Struggling to contain his fractured government under the glare of world markets, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said on Thursday that he remained committed to leading Greece out of the financial crisis and was confident he could pass needed reforms. 'You can rely on me and I will support the national effort to extract Greece from the crisis,' Mr. Papandreou told Parliament. A day after he failed to secure a unity government to push through austerity measures required to secure more international aid, Mr. Papandreou said he would seek a broader consensus and that he would announce a cabinet reshuffle, though he did not say when."

Seven Ways Scott Walker and the GOP Are Still Trying to Screw Wisconsin's Poor, Working Class, and Just About Everybody Else
http://www.truth-out.org/seven-ways-scott-walker-and-gop-are-still-trying-screw-wisconsins-poor-and-working-class/1308247508
Meredith Clark, AlterNet: "Wisconsin governor Scott Walker has taken a machete to the state's budget and has clearly relished every swipe he's taken to social programs and civil rights. The spirit of the enormous protests that sprang to life in February over Walker's proposal to ban collective bargaining is stronger than ever. Thousands of people descended upon the Capitol this week to protest both Monday's State Supreme Court decision to reinstate the collective bargaining ban and the governor's proposed two-year budget, which includes hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts and is currently moving through the legislature."

Vermont Breaks Ground in Health Coverage for Migrant Workers
http://www.truth-out.org/vermont-breaks-ground-health-coverage-migrant-workers/1308234488
Yvonne Yen Liu, New America Media: "Vermont, land of rolling green hills dotted with black and white Holsteins and picturesque red barns. White people, everywhere, lots of them. Home of state-sanctioned town hall meetings that are models for participatory democracy. And now, the first state in our republic to enact universal health care for all. Two weeks ago, Gov. Peter Shumlin signed into law H. 202, 'An act relating to a single-payer and unified health system.' It's the first state to plunge into a single-payer system to implement national health care reform, which Harvard economist William S. Hsiao found was the best method to both reign in spiraling costs and diminish disparities."

How the West Was Lost
http://www.truth-out.org/how-west-was-lost/1308232489
Chip Ward, TomDispatch: "Arizona is burning. Texas, too. New Mexico is next. If you need a grim reminder that an already arid West is burning up and blowing away, here it is. As I write this, more than 700 square miles of Arizona and more than 4,300 square miles of Texas have been swept by monster wildfires. Consider those massive columns of acrid smoke drifting eastward as a kind of smoke signal warning us that a globally warming world is not a matter of some future worst-case scenario. It's happening right here, right now."

The Revolution Will Not Be Deactualized
http://www.truth-out.org/revolution-will-not-be-deactualized/1308230236
Ted Rall, TedRall.com: "Will Tahrir Square Come to Washington? I used to work for Democratic candidates. I was a campus activist. I marched in protests. But, in the 1980s, I quit politics. I was fed up. The Left was impotent and inept. They didn't want to change things. They were content with theater. Bad theater at that: dorks on stilts, boring speakers, stupid slogans, the same old chants. 'The people, united, will never be defeated!' Except - we were defeated. We didn't even fight. Our protests were poorly attended. The media ignored us. And we always lost. Even the Democrats didn't care about us or our opinions. By the time Bill Clinton won in 1992, the progressive wing of the party was good for one thing: voting Democratic. Along with millions of others, I drifted away. Now, finally, for the first time in decades, I am excited."

TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES

No one's ever mistaken Prince Charles for the sharpest tool in the shed, but even he understands that man-made global warming is a reality.

In fact, he just recently chastised climate deniers and told Australian businessmen and women to get serious about saving the planet. (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/prince-charles-attacks-climate-deniers/story-e6frf7ko-1226076589474)

To quote the heir to the British throne,

"'All the evidence shows that we are living in an increasingly unstable world,' Prince Charles told industry figures gathered in Canberra.

'And yet we continue to test it to destruction and to allow the deniers of human-induced climate change to prevent vital action being taken.'"

However, in the US, the corporate media has accepted the "false equivalency" of airing business and right-wing, think-tank-backed scientists as counterpoints to the settled fact of the planet's deterioration due to unregulated industrial destruction.

The Truthout Progressive Pick of the Week, "Merchants of Doubt," (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift35-gift/choose-type-donation) provides an engrossing analysis of how "free market" ideological think tanks, wealthy individuals and Republican politicians in general strategically created a "false science" to insinuate into a mass media that won't take positions on proven facts.

Scientists were found who were willing - induced by either large sums of money or personal ideology - to serve as spokespersons to shoot down firm evidence against toxins like DDT, the danger of nuclear power plants, and - of course - climate change. In fact, Media Matters recently released a study showing that climate deniers dominate television news coverage of whether or not the Environmental Protection Agency should play an aggressive role in regulating industrial activity that leads to global warming. (http://www.mediamatters.com/research/201106070010)

"Merchants of Doubt" (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift35-gift/choose-type-donation) offers a fascinating insight into how we have arrived at this age when the media peddles pseudo-science. It is not an accident.

Our planet is at stake. Read the book. (https://members.truth-out.org/bgift35-gift/choose-type-donation)

Chip Ward, TomDispatch: "Arizona is burning. Texas, too. New Mexico is next=

Ted Rall, TedRall.com: "Will Tahrir Square Come to Washington? I used to wo=
rk for Democratic candidates. I was a campus activist. I marched in protest=
s. But, in the 1980s, I quit politics. I was fed up. The Left was impotent =
and inept. They didn't want to change things. They were content with theate=
r. Bad theater at that: dorks on stilts, boring speakers, stupid slogans, t=
he same old chants. 'The people, united, will never be defeated!' Except - =
we were defeated. We didn't even fight. Our protests were poorly attended. =
The media ignored us. And we always lost. Even the Democrats didn't care ab=
out us or our opinions. By the time Bill Clinton won in 1992, the progressi=

millions of others, I drifted away. Now, finally, for the first time in dec=
ades, I am excited." <br />
