100 Percent Scared: How the National Security Complex Grows on Terrorism Fe=
ars
http://www.truth-out.org/100-percent-scared-how-national-security-complex-g=
rows-terrorism-fears/1307639171
Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch: "Here, then, is one of the strange, if less ex=
plored, phenomena of our post-9/11 American age: in only one area of life a=
re Americans officially considered 100% scared, and so 100% in need of prot=
ection, and that's when it comes to terrorism. For an E. coli strain that c=
ould pose serious dangers, were it to arrive here, there is no uproar. No s=
creaming headlines highlight special demands that more money be poured into=
food safety; no instant plans have been rushed into place to review meat a=
nd vegetable security procedures; no one has been urging that a Global War =
on Food-Borne Illnesses be launched. In fact, at this moment, six strains o=
f E. coli that do cause illness in this country remain unregulated. Departm=
ent of Agriculture proposals to deal with them are 'stalled' at the Office =
of Management and Budget. Meanwhile, the super-toxic E. coli strain that ap=
peared in Europe remains officially unregulated here. On the other hand, se=
nd any goofus America-bound on a plane with any kind of idiotic device, and=
the politicians, the media, and the public promptly act as if - and it's y=
ou I'm addressing, Chicken Little - the sky were falling or civilization it=
self were at risk."

Paul Krugman | Inflation Fears Rising Faster Than Prices in US and Europe
http://www.truth-out.org/inflation-fears-rising-faster-prices-us-and-europe=
/1307641878
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "I've suspected that what we're really seeing =
is the inadequacy of even core inflation as a way to purge transitory effec=
ts of volatile prices: the measure takes out purchases of food and energy, =
but it doesn't take out indirect effects of raw material prices on costs. N=
ew research from Goldman Sachs seems to support that view: It finds that co=
re inflation is getting a temporary bump from the prices of imported raw ma=
terials, and will probably subside if the commodity surge is, in fact, over=
. This suggests that policy should really be based on some kind of 'superco=
re' inflation. Should this simply be wage growth? Economist Adam Posen at t=
he Bank of England has certainly gone down this route, arguing that the rel=
atively high rate of even core inflation in Britain reflects one-off factor=
s and that stagnant wages show that there are few risks."

Gingrich Senior Campaign Staff Resigns
http://www.truth-out.org/gingrich-senior-campaign-staff-resigns/1307649987
Trip Gabriel and Jeff Zeleny, The New York Times News Service: "Newt Gingri=
ch's campaign manager and a half-dozen senior advisers resigned on Thursday=
, two aides said, dealing a significant setback to his bid to seek the Repu=
blican presidential nomination and severely complicating his plan to make a=
political comeback. The campaign manager, Rob Johnson, along with longtime=
spokesman Rick Tyler and advisers in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolin=
a, joined together to step down after a period of deep internal disagreemen=
ts about the direction of the campaign. Mr. Gingrich, a former House speake=
r who has been fighting to regain his political footing after a rough campa=
ign roll out last month, had been absent from the campaign trail for about =
two weeks on what aides had described as a pre-planned vacation. He made hi=
s first return to the campaign trail on Wednesday in New Hampshire, one day=
 before the resignations were announced."

News in Brief: US Steps Up Secret War in Yemen, and More ...
http://www.truth-out.org/news-brief-us-steps-secret-war-yemen/1307639887
United States forces have stepped up a covert war against suspected militan=
ts in Yemen amid the violence and unrest that has weakened the country's go=
vernment; Japan now estimates that the amount of radiation that was initial=
ly released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant damaged by an ea=
rthquake and tsunami in April could have been twice as high as previously t=
hought; Citigroup Inc. reported today that hackers compromised the company'=
s information system and gained access to the credit card accounts of 200,0=
00 customers; immigrants in the United States considered to be highly skill=
ed workers now outnumber those considered lower skilled; the Environmental =
Protection Agency this week made public the identities of 150 chemicals con=
tained in 104 health safety studies formerly kept confidential by the chemi=
cal industry.

Court Refuses to Grant Shield Protection to Blogger
http://www.truth-out.org/court-refuses-grant-shield-protection-blogger/1307=
626180
Nadia Prupis, Truthout: "Bloggers who post messages on Internet forums are =
not protected by the New Jersey press shield law, which allows journalists =
to keep their confidential sources secret, the state Supreme Court ruled on=
Tuesday. Software company Too Much Media LLC (TMM) sued blogger Shellee Ha=
le for defamation in 2009 for comments she had made in an online forum abou=
t the firm's business conduct. Writing on a message board on pornography in=
dustry forum Oprano.com, Hale said that TMM, which sells software to adult =
web sites, had profited from a 2007 security breach that revealed customers=
' data."

Pawlenty's Economic Plan Cuts Taxes for Millionaires by 41 Percent
http://www.truth-out.org/pawlentys-economic-plan-cuts-taxes-millionaires-41=
-percent/1307626118
Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgress: "2012 presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty (R) ye=
sterday laid out his economic 'plan,' which is based around huge tax cuts t=
hat Pawlenty claims will spark a decade of 5 percent GDP growth, even thoug=
h growth staying at that rate for that long has literally never occurred in=
America. As Michael Linden noted, Pawlenty's tax plan would cost $7.8 tril=
lion over ten years, triple the size of the Bush tax cuts. During his speec=
h introducing the plan, Pawlenty excoriated President Obama as 'a champion =
practitioner of class warfare.' 'I come from a working class background. I =
didn't grow up with wealth. But I've never resented those who have it,' Paw=
lenty said. But as a new analysis from Citizens for Tax Justice shows, in a=
ddition to being outrageously expensive, Pawlenty's tax plan is based on th=
e Republican brand of class warfare - giving millionaires huge tax breaks."

Yemen's Opposition Aims to Strip President of Power
http://www.truth-out.org/yemeni-opposition-aims-strip-president-power/13076=
25753
Robert F. Worth, The New York Times News Service: "Yemeni opposition leader=
s and protesters intensified their demands on Wednesday for the creation of=
a presidential council that would take power from the country's president,=
Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is recovering in Saudi Arabia from wounds sustaine=
d in an attack on his palace mosque last week. One prominent group of prote=
sters and human rights activists announced Wednesday that they intended to =
form their own presidential council if the government did not abandon Mr. S=
aleh - a gesture that could provoke Mr. Saleh's supporters. Another faction=
, the formal political opposition, which has been unable to arrange a dialo=
gue with the governing party, is also pressing for an acknowledgment that M=
r. Saleh is gone for good. Although the opposition and the protesters are a=
t odds on major points - notably the question of whether Mr. Saleh and his =
family should receive immunity from prosecution - both groups are keen to u=
se Mr. Saleh's absence to remove him permanently from the political scene."

The Long, Ideological Road to Nowhere
http://www.truth-out.org/long-ideological-road-nowhere/1307549224
Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III, Truthout: "On June 1, Kathy Hochul (D-New York) was=
sworn in as the newest member of Congress. She won her seat in a special e=
lection to fill the seat vacated by Republican Chris Lee in New York's 26th=
District, pulling off what many consider to be the biggest political upset=
since Republican Scott Brown snatched the 'Kennedy' seat away from Martha =
Coakley in Massachusetts. First, it is important to understand why Republic=
an Chris Lee, a member of the party of 'family values,' vacated his seat. L=
ee resigned in February, just hours after a web site reported that the marr=
ied Congressman was soliciting women on the Internet and sent a shirtless i=
mage of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist. It is important to analyze=
this 'moral lapse' in its broader historical context. These things don't h=
appen in a vacuum. It is just the most recent example of the moral hypocris=
y demonstrated by the self-anointed arbiters of American 'family values.'"

Landmark Agreement on Amazon Oilfields Shows Indigenous Movements' New Powe=
r
http://www.truth-out.org/bereft-drama-amazon/1307632808
Darrin Mortenson, Truthout: "When reviewing a story about a recent deal bet=
ween the government and Indians regarding multinational oil companies in th=
e Peruvian Amazon, the editor of an important national news magazine said t=
he story seemed 'bereft of drama' and too full of 'insidery [sic] negotiati=
ons.' He was right. And that was what made it news. After having to seize o=
il facilities, capture airfields and blockade roads and rivers in recent ye=
ars in order to grab attention and force talks, the Quechua people of North=
ern Peru this week won a landmark agreement with the regional government of=
Loreto - a virtual dream sheet, really, considering the decades of neglect=
 - for services and projects in their communities along the Pastaza River n=
ear the border with Ecuador. A key feature of the freshly inked 'Pastaza Ac=
t' is a sweeping investigation of health and environmental impacts that cou=
ld bolster the Indians' case against Plus Petrol, the Argentinean oil compa=
ny that they blame for polluting their rivers and ancestral territory for y=
ears."

President Obama Must Not Go Over to the Supply Side
http://www.truth-out.org/robert-reich-president-must-not-go-over-supply-sid=
e/1307640583
Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Obama says he's interested in exploring=
with Republicans extending some of the measures that were part of that tax=
-cut package 'to make sure that we get this recovery up and running in a ro=
bust way.' Accordingly, the White House is mulling a temporary cut in the p=
ayroll taxes businesses pay on wages. White House advisors figure this may =
appeal to Republican lawmakers who have been discussing the same idea. It w=
ould, in essence, match the 2 percent reduction in employee contributions t=
o payroll taxes this year, enacted as part of the deal to extend the Bush t=
ax cuts. Other ideas under consideration at the White House include a corpo=
rate tax cut, accompanied by the closing of some corporate tax loopholes. C=
an we get real for a moment?"

Was Fukushima Too Big to Fail?
http://www.truth-out.org/was-fukushima-too-big-fail/1307563112
Tom H. Hastings, Truthout: "We have just been told today that the economy i=
s tanking again in part because of Fukushima. A Japanese disaster is an Ame=
rican disaster these days. We have 110 nuclear reactors in the US. How many=
could suffer massive damage like Fukushima before we wreck our economy for=
many years to come? 'Only' four of these plants are in similar earthquake =
and tsunami zones? Well, what else might surprise us? What if a nuclear pow=
er plant gets hit by a massive tornado? Lucky thing there was no nuclear po=
wer plant in Joplin, Missouri. How many 200 mph trucks flying through the a=
ir would it take to breach a reactor? What happens when floods overwhelm a =
nuclear power plant on the Mississippi River? Can't happen? Right. Neither =
could Fukushima. I've been to the Prairie Island nuclear power plants and o=
n-site storage of massive amounts of high-level nuclear waste. They are sma=
ck in the floodplain of the biggest river in North America. The potential e=
xists there to poison that river for generations. All it takes is one bad h=
and from Mother Nature, one demented terrorist in a small airplane loaded w=
ith explosives, one human operator error."

Slain Writer's Book Says US-NATO War Served Al-Qaeda Strategy
http://www.truth-out.org/slain-writers-book-says-us-nato-war-served-al-qaed=
a-strategy/1307637223
Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: "Al-Qaeda strategists have been assisti=
ng the Taliban fight against US-NATO forces in Afghanistan because they bel=
ieve that foreign occupation has been the biggest factor in generating Musl=
im support for uprisings against their governments, according to the just-p=
ublished book by Syed Saleem Shahzad, the Pakistani journalist whose body w=
as found in a canal outside Islamabad last week with evidence of having bee=
n tortured. That Al-Qaeda view of the US-NATO war in Afghanistan, which Sha=
hzad reports in the book based on conversations with several senior Al- Qae=
da commanders, represents the most authoritative picture of the organisatio=
n's thinking available to the public. Shahzad's book 'Inside Al-Qaeda and t=
he Taliban' was published on May 24 - only three days before he went missin=
g from Islamabad on his way to a television interview. His body was found M=
ay 31."

Sen. Bernie Sanders Belongs on the Sunday Shows
http://www.truth-out.org/senator-bernie-sanders-belongs-sunday-shows/130763=
2671
Robert Greenwald, Brave New Foundation: "Senator Sanders is a bold voice, a=
nd one that's missing every Sunday. He's a passionate advocate for the midd=
le class and yet his last morning show appearance came late last year. Comp=
are that to Sen. John McCain, who leads everyone with 10 appearances this y=
ear alone. His friends and ideological allies, Sens. Lindsay Graham and Joe=
Lieberman, round out the top seven interviewees this year, with six and fi=
ve appearances each. The Sunday shows often set the tone for the upcoming p=
olitical week. As the same voices drone on, the Senator's absence means the=
political and media elites are overlooking the forces squeezing working an=
d middle class Americans."

TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES =20

Yesterday, I received an offer that I could refuse.

It was an email invitation from Tom Culligan, vice president of the Rev. Mo=
on-founded Washington Times:

"Please accept this as your personal invitation to join me on what promises=
to be one of the most exciting and enjoyable getaways in recent memory: th=
e August 27 - September 3, 2011 CPAC cruise: North to Alaska!

"Don Rumsfeld will be one of your fellow shipmates. As will NRA president D=
avid Keene, American Conservative Union chairman Al Cardenas, Americans for=
Tax Reform president Grover Norquist, and, of course, yours truly....

"I have to tell you: when I watched 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' on my big-screen=
TV, I fell in love with that wild and wonderful state. And, now, I can't w=
ait to roam its pristine terrain."

Holy wolf hunting from a helicopter with a sniper rifle! I just had to chec=
k out the cruise web site (http://www.cpaccruise.com/index.html), only to f=
ind that the most inexpensive single cabin was $2,502. (http://www.cpaccrui=
se.com/pricing.htm)

Of course, there is also the Koch brothers' accommodations package for the =
princely sum of $6,826, but it might be worth the price just to have that m=
ini bar and open sea verandah for relief if I had to pal around with Rummy,=
Grover and Ralph Reed all day. (http://www.cpaccruise.com/speakers.htm)

There's nothing like sailing toward the Arctic, which is expected to dramat=
ically accelerate its meltdown in the next few decades (http://newsroom.ucl=
a.edu/portal/ucla/with-global-warming-arctic-access-203603.aspx), with a ro=
gue's gallery of global warming deniers and neocons.

But it's a moot point. The only way I could afford the cruise would be to f=
ind some large gold nuggets, maybe in front of Sarah Palin's window from wh=
ich she can see Russia.

sters and human rights activists announced Wednesday that they intended to =
form their own presidential council if the government did not abandon Mr. S=
aleh - a gesture that could provoke Mr.
Saleh and his =
family should receive immunity from prosecution - both groups are keen to u=
se Mr. Saleh's absence to remove him permanently from the political scene."=

<font><strong>The Long, Ideological Road to Nowhere</strong></font><br />
Dr.
It is just the most recent example of the moral hypocris=
y demonstrated by the self-anointed arbiters of American 'family values.'" =

<font><strong>Landmark Agreement on Amazon Oilfields Shows Indigenous Movem=

A key feature of the freshly inked 'Pastaza Ac=
t' is a sweeping investigation of health and environmental impacts that cou=
ld bolster the Indians' case against Plus Petrol, the Argentinean oil compa=
ny that they blame for polluting their rivers and ancestral territory for y=
ears." <br />

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Obama says he's interested in exploring=

bust way.' Accordingly, the White House is mulling a temporary cut in the p=

appeal to Republican lawmakers who have been discussing the same idea. It w=

rate tax cut, accompanied by the closing of some corporate tax loopholes. C=

<font><strong>Was Fukushima Too Big to Fail?</strong></font><br />
Tom H. Hastings, Truthout: "We have just been told today that the economy i=

could suffer massive damage like Fukushima before we wreck our economy for=
many years to come? 'Only' four of these plants are in similar earthquake =
and tsunami zones? Well, what else might surprise us? What if a nuclear pow=
er plant gets hit by a massive tornado? Lucky thing there was no nuclear po=
wer plant in Joplin, Missouri. How many 200 mph trucks flying through the a=
ir would it take to breach a reactor? What happens when floods overwhelm a =
nuclear power plant on the Mississippi River? Can't happen? Right. Neither =
could Fukushima. I've been to the Prairie Island nuclear power plants and o=

Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: "Al-Qaeda strategists have been assisti=
