Kazakh Money in Congress?
http://www.truth-out.org/kazakh-money-congress/1307544295
Jake Wiens, Truthout: "It has all the twists of a Hollywood blockbuster: sh=
adowy international figures, a plot to overthrow an oil-rich Central Asian =
country, an attempted assassination, allegations of kidnapping and murder a=
nd a battle in an American courtroom for control of billions of dollars in =
seized assets. At the center of this saga is a bitter family feud that pits=
Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev - a strongman who has ruled the =
obscure former Soviet republic for more than 20 years - against his former =
son-in-law, Rakhat Aliyev. And if that was where the story ended, it might =
have stayed an inconspicuous foreign squabble with no relevance to the Amer=
ican public."
Joseph S. Nye | Has Economic Power Replaced Military Might?
http://www.truth-out.org/has-economic-power-replaced-military-might/1307539=
510
Joseph S. Nye, Project Syndicate: "Political observers have long debated wh=
ether economic or military power is more fundamental. The Marxist tradition=
casts economics as the underlying structure of power, and political instit=
utions as a mere superstructure, an assumption shared by nineteenth-century=
liberals who believed that growing interdependence in trade and finance wo=
uld make war obsolete. But, while Britain and Germany were each other's mos=
t significant trading partners in 1914, that did not prevent a conflagratio=
n that set back global economic integration for a half-century. Military po=
wer, which some call the ultimate form of power in world politics, requires=
a thriving economy. But whether economic or military resources produce mor=
e power in today's world depends on the context. A carrot is more effective=
than a stick if you wish to lead a mule to water, but a gun may be more us=
eful if your aim is to deprive an opponent of his mule. Many crucial issues=
, such as financial stability or climate change, simply are not amenable to=
military force. Today, China and the US are highly interdependent economic=
ally, but many analysts misunderstand the implications of this for power po=
litics."
More Bucks, Less Bang: The Ineffective Weapons Disease Infects Another Gene=
ration of Weapons
http://www.truth-out.org/more-bucks-less-bang-ineffective-weapons-disease-i=
nfects-another-generation-weapons/1307469650
Dina Rasor, Truthout: "I could write numerous columns outlining all the cur=
rent overpriced and low functioning weapons, but there is a new group of we=
apons that the DoD has promised to revolutionize warfare for these various =
wars we are involved. According to Wired.com's Danger Room, the Pentagon pl=
ans to double its unmanned air force. This is in the face of budget cuts an=
d concerns about the overruns and technical problems of the next generation=
of aircraft, especially the F-35. Unmanned aircraft, better known as drone=
s to the public, have suddenly been elevated to new heights with the spying=
on Bin Laden's compound to drone missile strikes in Pakistan. There are al=
ready heated discussions on whether drone warfare works or not from a strat=
egic point of view, but I will refrain from that argument today in order to=
just look at whether the drones are working as advertised and whether thei=
r price is becoming as prohibitive as the manned DoD aircraft."
NATO Planes Bomb Tripoli for Hours on End
http://www.truth-out.org/nato-planes-bomb-tripoli-hours-end/1307543459
Patrick J. McConnell, The Los Angeles Times: "Waves of NATO fighter planes =
hit the Libyan capital Tuesday with one of the largest bombardments of the =
city since the Western-led alliance began airstrikes almost three months ag=
o. It was a brazen daylight attack that went on for hours and highlighted h=
ow thoroughly the Western alliance controls the skies after wiping out much=
of Libya's antiaircraft capabilities in the earliest days of the battle. P=
lumes of thick black smoke rose in the afternoon sky over Moammar Kadafi's =
fortified Bab Aziza compound, which was heavily damaged in the barrage. Exp=
losions were heard late into the afternoon, hours after the initial attacks=
began in the morning."

Soldiers returning home from Afghanistan said they had to pay Delta Air Lin=

he cashes every month; a two-year study by the Senate Foreign Relations Co=
mmittee's Democratic majority found that the $320 million a month in foreig=
n aid spent in Afghanistan should focus on sustainability, rather than the =
short-term stabilization programs in regions where the Taliban is the stron=

back public broadcasting produced in the state by giving New York's WNET-T=

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: "How I wish that Ben Bernanke would get caught ema=
iling photos of his underwear-clad groin. Otherwise we don't stand a chance=
of reversing this administration's economic policy, which is shaping up to=
be every bit as disastrous as that of its predecessor. Indeed, the Fed cha=
irman's much anticipated remarks on Tuesday take one back to the contemptuo=
us indifference of a Herbert Hoover to the public's suffering: Bernanke dis=
missed the wobbly economy with its anemic 1.8 percent first-quarter growth =
as merely 'somewhat slower than expected.' The rise in unemployment to 9.1 =
percent was 'some loss of momentum.' The problem with Bernanke is that he i=

After 40 Years, the Complete Pentagon Papers
http://www.truth-out.org/after-40-years-complete-pentagon-papers/1307554602
Michael Cooper and Same Roberts, The New York Times News Service: "It may b=
e a first in the annals of government secrecy: Declassifying documents to m=
ark the anniversary of their leak to the press. But that is what will happe=
n Monday, when the federal government plans to finally release the secret g=
overnment study of the Vietnam War known as the Pentagon Papers 40 years af=
ter it was first published by The New York Times. At first blush, it sounds=
like the release of one of the worst-kept secrets in history - finally unl=
ocking the barn door four decades after the horses bolted. The study, after=
all, has already been published by The Times and other newspapers, resulti=
ng in a landmark First Amendment decision by the Supreme Court. It has been=
released in book form more than once. But it turns out that those texts ha=
ve been incomplete: When all 7,000 pages are released Monday, officials say=
, the study can finally be read in its original form. That it took until th=
e era of WikiLeaks for the government to declassify the Pentagon Papers str=
uck some participants as, to say the least, curious.
Bill Moyers on His Legendary Journalism Career: "Democracy Should Be a Brak=

http://www.truth-out.org/bill-moyers-his-legendary-journalism-career-democr=

Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzales and Bill Moyers, Democracy Now!: "In a Democracy=
Now! special broadcast, we are joined by legendary journalist Bill Moyers,=
a founding organizer of the Peace Corps, press secretary for President Lyn=
don Johnson, a publisher of Newsday, and senior correspondent for CBS News.=
Public television is where he has made his home, producing many groundbrea=
king shows and winning more than 30 Emmy Awards. Moyers has just published =
a new book, 'Bill Moyers Journal: The Conversation Continues,' a collection=
of interviews from his popular PBS show that aired from 2007 to 2010. 'The=
greatest thing in politics in my time is the transformation of democracy f=
rom a citizens society-all that moral agency of all those people in the civ=
il rights movement who stood up against the weight or authority and acted a=
s agents of change-to a consumer society, where most of us are caught up on=
that treadmill, trying to get more,' Moyers says."
Food Sovereignty Responds to Corporate Takeover of Food Production
http://www.truth-out.org/food-sovereignty-responds-corporate-takeover-food-=
production/1307457766
Yve le Grand, Truthout: "Although the credit crunch has pushed the issue of=
the global food crisis to the background, it is still going on today. In f=
act, the number of chronically hungry people worldwide has risen and is est=
imated to amount to 967 million people according to the new Declaration of =
Human Rights, launched by the Cordoba process at the end of 2008, on the oc=
casion of the Declaration's 60th anniversary. The world famine in the 1970s=
led the Declaration to introduce the concept of food security: '... the av=
ailability at all times of adequate world food supplies of basic foodstuffs=
to sustain a steady expansion of food consumption and to offset fluctuatio=
ns in production and prices.' This definition of food security, which is ba=
sically a technical matter of providing adequate human nutrition, led to th=
e assumption that more food production would solve the problem of mass star=
vation."
Hope in Afghanistan: An Interview With Malalai Joya
http://www.truth-out.org/hope-afghanistan-interview-malalai-joya/1306515525
David Zlutnick, Truthout: "Malalai Joya is an Afghan activist, author and f=
ormer politician. She served as an elected member of the 2003 Loya Jirga an=
d was a Parliamentary member of the National Assembly of Afghanistan, until=
she was expelled for denouncing other members as warlords and war criminal=
s. She has been a vocal critic of both the US/NATO occupation and the Karza=
i government, as well as the Taliban and Islamic fundamentalists. After sur=
viving four assassination attempts, she currently lives underground in Afgh=
anistan, continuing her work from safe houses. After the release of her mem=
oir, 'A Woman Among Warlords,' she recently concluded a US speaking tour. T=
he following is an edited transcript of a filmed interview with I did with =
Joya from April 9 in San Francisco."
GOP Plan to Run Fake Democratic Candidates
http://www.truth-out.org/gop-plan-run-fake-democratic-candidates/1307541498
Monica Davey, The New York Times News Service: "In just the last few weeks,=
Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, has signed legislation to require voters =
to show photo identification cards at the polls and to deregulate elements =
of the telecommunications industry. And the Republican-dominated Legislatur=
e is now in the midst of advancing provisions to expand school vouchers, to=
allow people to carry concealed weapons, to cut financing for Planned Pare=
nthood and to bar illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition at Wiscon=
sin's universities. Why the urgency? Republicans, who suddenly swept into c=
ontrol of this Capitol in last fall's elections, face a deadline of sorts. =
Though the lawmakers insist that their hurry-up offense is just living up t=
o campaign promises, there is a threat looming: They are at risk of losing =
their newly won majority in the State Senate as early as next month."
TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES =20
We are in the midst of a tsunami wave destroying millions and millions of j=
obs in America, while Washington is obsessed with cutting the deficit and A=
nthony Weiner's lascivious Internet "flirtations."
Bob Herbert - who is now blogging at the Policy Shop (http://www.policyshop=
.net/home/2011/6/7/the-jobs-emergency-and-america-in-crisis.html) at the th=
ink tank Demos - pleads that this is the time to pull the fire alarm on une=
mployment:
"What we have on our hands is a catastrophe. The economy has proved incapab=
le of generating enough jobs for those who want and desperately need to wor=
k. The few jobs that are being created are mostly low-paying and part-time,=
with few or no benefits.
"What is bizarre is the extent to which politicians have turned their backs=
on this issue, yammering incessantly (and ineffectively) about budget-cutt=
ing and fiscal responsibility while doing nothing, absolutely nothing, abou=
t jobs.
"We're in a different era now - an era of declining living standards and a =
much bleaker future than Americans had become accustomed to."
Washington, DC, Herbert argues, is in a glass bubble of delusion: "Presiden=
t Obama referred to May's execrable jobs numbers as a bump in the road. Rep=
ublicans and Democrats alike are counseling austerity, which is like weaken=
ing the water pressure of firefighters trying to contain a conflagration."
The corporate control over the debate about the future of America is implod=
ing the US workforce, as jobs are steadily relocated offshore, automation i=
ncreases business profits and the few jobs created are salaried at barely l=
ivable wages.
Our manufacturing industry long ago cratered.
If there is no awakening to this reality by those in DC, it will not be lon=
g before the US becomes a third-world market for global corporations here. =
There simply won't be enough consumer buying power to fuel domestic economi=
c expansion.
But, in essence, that part of the tsunami wave has already struck our shore=
s.

Hope in Afghanistan: An Interview With Malalai Joya<=
/font>

We are in the midst of a tsunami wave destroying millions and million=

What we have on our hands is a catastrophe. The economy has =
proved incapable of generating enough jobs for those who want and desperate=
ly need to work. The few jobs that are being created are mostly low-paying =
and part-time, with few or no benefits.

What is bizarre is the extent to which politicians have turned their bac=
ks on this issue, yammering incessantly (and ineffectively) about budget-cu=
tting and fiscal responsibility while doing nothing, absolutely nothing, ab=
out jobs.

We're in a different era now - an era of declining living standards and =
a much bleaker future than Americans had become accustomed to.
</blockqu=

Washington, DC, Herbert argues, is in a glass bubble of delusion: "Presi=
dent Obama referred to May's execrable jobs numbers as a bump in the road. =
Republicans and Democrats alike are counseling austerity, which is like wea=
kening the water pressure of firefighters trying to contain a conflagration=

The corporate control over the debate about the future of America is imp=

Our manufacturing industry long ago cratered.

If there is no awakening to this reality by those in DC, it will not be =
long before the US becomes a third-world market for global corporations her=

omic expansion.

But, in essence, that part of the tsunami wave has already struck our sh=
