Bill Moyers Interviews Andrew Bacevich
http://www.truthout.org/bill-moyers-interviews-andrew-bacevich/1306971684
Bill Moyers, The New Press: "Our finest warriors are often our most relucta=
nt warmongers. They have seen firsthand the toll war exacts. They know bett=
er than anyone that force can be like a lobster trap that closes with each =
stage of descent, making escape impossible. So it was when the liberal cons=
ensus lured America into Vietnam during the '60s, and again after 9/11, whe=
n neoconservatives clamored for the invasion of Iraq.... One old warrior lo=
oked on sadly, his understanding of combat's reality tempered by twenty-thr=
ee years in uniform, including service in Vietnam.... Bacevich supported Ba=
rack Obama's candidacy but believes that Obama's commitment of more troops =
to Afghanistan was a deadly mistake."

Zombie Politics: Dangerous Authoritarianism or Shrinking Democracy - Part I=
I
http://www.truthout.org/zombie-politics-dangerous-authoritarianism-or-shrin=
king-democracy-part-ii/1306795464
Henry A. Giroux, Peter Lang Publishing Group: "While precise accounts of th=
e meaning of authoritarianism, especially fascism, abound, I have no desire=
, given its shifting nature, to impose a rigid or universal definition. Wha=
t is to be noted is that many scholars, such as Kevin Passmore and Robert O=
. Paxton, agree that authoritarianism is a mass movement that emerges out o=
f a failed democracy, and its ideology is extremely anti-liberal, anti-demo=
cratic, and anti-socialistic. As a social order, it is generally characteri=
zed by a system of terror directed against perceived enemies of the state; =
a monopolistic control of the mass media; an expanding prison system; a sta=
te monopoly of weapons; political rule by privileged groups and classes; co=
ntrol of the economy by a limited number of people; unbridled corporatism; =
'the appeal to emotion and myth rather than reason; the glorification of vi=
olence on behalf of a national cause; the mobilization and militarization o=
f civil society; [and] an expansionist foreign policy intended to promote n=
ational greatness.'"

Bill McKibben | Obama Strikes Out on Global Warming
http://www.truth-out.org/obama-strikes-out-global-warming/1307023835
Bill McKibben, TomDispatch: "In our globalized world, old-fashioned geograp=
hy is not supposed to count for much: mountain ranges, deep-water ports, ra=
ilroad grades - those seem so nineteenth century. The earth is flat, or so =
I remember somebody saying. But those nostalgic for an earlier day, take he=
art. The Obama administration is making its biggest decisions yet on our en=
ergy future and those decisions are intimately tied to this continent's geo=
graphy. Remember those old maps from your high-school textbooks that showed=
each state and province's prime economic activities? A sheaf of wheat for =
farm country? A little steel mill for manufacturing? These days in North Am=
erica what you want to look for are the pickaxes that mean mining, and the =
derricks that stand for oil."

From Civil Disobedience to Civil Defiance
http://www.truthout.org/civil-disobedience-civil-defiance/1305657868
Ed Kinane, Truthout: "Thanks in large part to court and prison witness, one=
grassroots organization I've long worked with has grown by leaps and bound=
s. Determined to expose and close the Pentagon's School of the Americas (SO=
A) - aka the 'School of Assassins' - more than 200 SOA Watch activists over=
the years have willingly endured trial and incarceration. Inspired by them=
, each November, thousands from all over the country converge on Fort Benni=
ng, Georgia to protest the SOA there for fostering large-scale bloodshed an=
d human rights abuse in Latin America. (In response to our persistent press=
ure, the SOA has undergone a PR makeover: it has changed its name to the We=
stern Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, WHINSEC.)"

News in Brief: War on Drugs Has Failed, and More ...
http://www.truthout.org/news-brief-war-drugs-has-failed-and-more/1307033901
The Global Commission on Drug Policy declared in a statement that global wa=
r on drugs has failed; a British mining company voluntarily suspended a hyd=
raulic fracturing, aka "fracking," operation after scientists said the dril=
ling operation might have triggered two earthquakes; Adrian Lamo, the ex-ha=
cker who turned in alleged WikiLeaks leaker Bradley Manning, recently said =
that he does not regret snitching on Manning and aiding in the criminal pro=
secution of the former military intelligence officer; dozens of Yemeni prot=
esters were killed in street battles with the country's security forces yes=
terday.

Naomi Wolf | Sex and Surveillance
http://www.truthout.org/sex-and-surveillance/1307023583
Naomi Wolf, Project Syndicate: "It is impossible to hear about sexual or se=
x-crime scandals nowadays - whether that involving Dominique Strauss-Kahn o=
r those of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, Italian Prime Minister S=
ilvio Berlusconi, or the half-dozen United States congressmen whose careers=
have ended in the past couple of years - without considering how they were=
exposed. What does it mean to live in a society in which surveillance is o=
mnipresent? Like the heat beneath the proverbial boiling frogs, the level o=
f surveillance in Western democracies has been ratcheted up slowly - but fa=
r faster than citizens can respond."

Goldman Receives Subpoena Over Financial Crisis
http://www.truth-out.org/goldman-receives-subpoena-over-financial-crisis/13=
07040455
Suzanne Craig and Andrew Ross Sorkin, The New York Times News Service: "Gol=
dman Sachs has received a subpoena from the office of the Manhattan distric=
t attorney, which is investigating the investment bank's role in the financ=
ial crisis, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The inquiry s=
tems from a 650-page Senate report from the Permanent Subcommittee on Inves=
tigations that indicated Goldman had misled clients and Congress about its =
practices related to mortgage-linked securities. The subpoena come two week=
s after lawyers for Goldman Sachs met with the attorney general of New York=
's office for an 'exploratory' meeting about the Senate report, the people =
said."

US Uses Peace Talks to Divide Taliban From Pakistan
http://www.truthout.org/us-uses-peace-talks-divide-taliban-pakistan/1307029=
919
Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: "The leaked reports over the past two w=
eeks of a series of meetings between US officials and a Taliban figure clos=
e to leader Mullah Omar seemed to point to real progress toward a negotiate=
d settlement of the war in Afghanistan. But in fact the talks are part of a=
Barack Obama administration strategy aimed at putting pressure on the Tali=
ban leadership in part by dividing it from Pakistan as well as bolstering O=
bama's domestic support for the war. Senior administration officials hope t=
o use the talks to sow suspicion between the Taliban and their main ally, t=
hus weakening the Taliban resolve to negotiate on a peace settlement only i=
f the United States offers a timetable for troop withdrawal."

Seeing Through Transparency: On WikiLeaks
http://www.truth-out.org/seeing-through-transparency-wikileaks/1307031967
Sarah Leonard, Dissent: "The data dumps that have made Assange notorious ha=
ve not been WikiLeaks's only mode of communication. Devotees of the organiz=
ation will remember that in Spring 2010 WikiLeaks made a huge splash with i=
ts 'Collateral Murder' video, showing American soldiers firing on and killi=
ng Iraqi civilians and two Reuters employees circa 2007. Assange presented =
the video at a press event that had more in common with broadcast journalis=
m than with data dumping. He offered context and opinion; he tracked down f=
amily members of victims beforehand. It was a fully formed story, with its =
own politics and purpose. These days, WikiLeaks is somewhat different."

Mitt Romney Enters Presidential Race
http://www.truthout.org/mitt-romney-enters-presidential-race/1307040810
David Lightman, McClatchy Newspapers: "Romney hit the notes that the party'=
s influential right wing loves to hear. Not only did Romney offer a sharp c=
ontrast with Obama, but he spoke the language of groups like the conservati=
ve Granite State Patriots, who repeatedly bring up a need to return to what=
they see as the Constitution's call for state's rights and a more limited =
federal government. Nothing angers them more than the 2010 federal health c=
are law, which requires nearly everyone to get coverage by 2014 - and indiv=
idual mandate being challenged by 26 states in federal court - and that's w=
here Romney could run into big trouble."

Fighting in Yemen Capital Threatens Main Airport
http://www.truth-out.org/fighting-yemen-capital-threatens-main-airport/1307=
021796
Nasser Arrabyee and Robert F. Worth, The New York Times News Service: "Heav=
y shelling north of Yemen's capital threatened to close the main internatio=
nal airport Thursday as government troops and opposition tribesmen appeared=
to escalate bloody street battles that have pushed the country to the edge=
of civil war. The airport, which lies roughly six miles north of the city,=
was open on Thursday and flights operated normally, the airport director, =
Naji Quddam, said in a statement, denying earlier news reports that it had =
closed. But the main road to the airport from Sana remained dangerous to na=
vigate because of government checkpoints, sporadic shelling and heavy fight=
ing in the north of the city."

Right-Wing Anti-Abortion Ferver Extends to Birth Control and More (Video)
http://www.truthout.org/right-wing-anti-abortion-ferver-extends-birth-contr=
ol-and-more/1307042307
Rachel Maddow, The Rachel Maddow Show: Rachel Maddow reports on a movement =
to oppose the birth control pill that is finding some quarter in the broade=
r big government conservative movement.

TRUTHOUT'S BUZZFLASH DAILY HEADLINES

BuzzFlash at Truthout has posted a lot of commentary over the years about t=
he Republican Party's war on democracy.

It's not an exaggeration, either. All of the current efforts to reduce the =
number of people who vote are aimed at disenfranchising Americans who are l=
ess wealthy, less mobile, less knowledgeable about voting requirements - an=
d, of course - the young, particularly on college campuses.

The Republicans generally believe that we are not a democracy in which ever=
yone has a right to vote: Voting is the ultimate entitlement belonging to t=
hose who believe that this is a white, Christian nation run by people of me=
ans.

In recent coverage of Republican statewide initiatives to expand voter iden=
tification requirements, other new voter suppression strategies are being o=
verlooked by the mainstream media. These include longer residency requireme=
nts to keep students from being able to vote on their campuses and reducing=
 - that's right, reducing - the period for advance voting.

One of the six Republican state senators up for recall in Wisconsin adds a =
new wrinkle to the GOP's dim view of democracy. He wants all the public wor=
kers in his district to sleep through the election (http://www.jsonline.com=
/blogs/news/122958443.html): "We've got tons of government workers in my di=
strict - tons," said GOP state Sen. Dan Kapanke. "From La Crosse to Prairie=
du Chien and to Viroqua and to Ontario and to Hillsboro, you can go on and=
on and on. We have to overcome that. We gotta hope that they, kind of, are=
sleeping on July 12th - or whenever the (election) date is."

BuzzFlash at Truthout imagines that Senator Kapanke was being sarcastic, bu=
t if I were a government employee in his district, I wouldn't accept any sa=
mple sleeping pills the night before the election.

<p><em>BuzzFlash at Truthout has posted a lot of commentary over the years =
about the Republican Party's war on democracy.</em></p>
<p><em>
<p>It's not an exaggeration, either. All of the current efforts to reduce t=
he number of people who vote are aimed at disenfranchising Americans who ar=
e less wealthy, less mobile, less knowledgeable about voting requirements -=
and, of course - the young, particularly on college campuses.</p>
<p>The Republicans generally believe that we are not a democracy in which e=
veryone has a right to vote: Voting is the ultimate entitlement belonging t=
o those who believe that this is a white, Christian nation run by people of=
 means.</p>
<p>In recent coverage of Republican statewide initiatives to expand voter i=
dentification requirements, other new voter suppression strategies are bein=
g overlooked by the mainstream media. These include longer residency requir=
ements to keep students from being able to vote on their campuses and reduc=
ing - that's right, reducing - the period for advance voting.</p>
<p>One of the six Republican state senators up for recall in Wisconsin adds=
a new wrinkle to the GOP's dim view of democracy. He wants all the public =
workers in his district to <a href=3D"http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia=
/track.jsp?v=3D2&c=3DwQiwhXoBXTSDFy8Lo4upfiI2WybeR8a4"><font color=3D"#cc00=
00">sleep through the election</font></a>: "We've got tons of government wo=
rkers in my district - tons," said GOP state Sen. Dan Kapanke. "From La Cro=
sse to Prairie du Chien and to Viroqua and to Ontario and to Hillsboro, you=
can go on and on and on. We have to overcome that. We gotta hope that they=
, kind of, are sleeping on July 12th - or whenever the (election) date is."=
</p>
<p>BuzzFlash at Truthout imagines that Senator Kapanke was being sarcastic,=
but if I were a government employee in his district, I wouldn't accept any=
sample sleeping pills the night before the election.</p>
