Inviting Chaos: The Perils of Toying With the Debt Ceiling
http://www.truthout.org/inviting-chaos-perils-toying-debt-ceiling/1306515903
Ellen Brown, Truthout: "On May 16, The Wall Street Journal published an opinion piece titled 'The Armageddon Lobby,' which claimed that a 'technical default' on the federal debt was just 'political melodrama' and not really a big deal: '[B]ond markets can figure out the difference between a genuine default when a country can't pay its bills and a technical default of a few days if it serves the purpose of fixing America's fiscal mess.' It is not just that the government could be brought to a standstill, with a third of its bills now being paid by borrowing, or that interest rates would shoot up, forcing thousands of homeowners into foreclosure. Failure to pay on the national debt could trigger a default on the global reserve currency."

William Rivers Pitt | They Love Each Other
http://www.truth-out.org/they-love-each-other/1306497200
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "For the first time, a majority of Americans are in favor of same-sex marriage, which may simply be another way of saying they don't give a damn one way or the other. The turgid culture war issues of the last few decades don't appear to be high on most people's priority list anymore, now that wars and unemployment and economic calamity have crowded them out. Jim Daly, president of the holy-rolling Focus on the Family, recently said the fight over same-sex marriage is all but over, and his side did not prevail. My home state of Massachusetts enjoys the honor, thanks to the 2004 ruling in Goodridge v. The Department of Health, of being the first state in this union to legalize same-sex marriage. In Cambridge, just across the river, they lined up around the block at City Hall to make the oath and take the plunge. There were so many smiles, so many hugs, so many tears of pure joy on that day. It was magical, and far overdue."

Asserting War Powers, House Moves to End Afghanistan, Libya Wars
http://www.truthout.org/asserting-war-powers-house-moves-end-afghanistan-libya-wars/1306511410
Robert Naiman, Truthout: "Voting on amendments to the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, the House of Representatives took action to hasten the end of the wars in Afghanistan and Libya. By a 204-215 vote roll call - six switchers would have passed the amendment - the House narrowly failed to adopt a bipartisan amendment from Reps. Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts) and Justin Amash (R-Michigan) that would have required the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop a plan for an, 'accelerated transition of military operations to Afghan authorities.' By the spectacular vote of 416-5, the House adopted an amendment initiated by Michigan Rep. John Conyers prohibiting the introduction into Libya of US ground troops (that is, uniformed forces, not Special Forces or CIA agents that are already there)."

Paul Krugman | For Emerging Economies, a Dilemma Becomes a "Trilemma"
http://www.truthout.org/emerging-economies-dilemma-becomes-trilemma/1306502804
Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: "I don't know why I didn't think to put it this way before - and I don't know if anyone else is saying this - but what we have here is a classic example of the Mundellian impossible trinity, also known as 'the trilemma,' which says that you can't simultaneously have free movement of capital, a stable exchange rate and independent monetary policy. So, how does this apply to current issues? Advanced countries, very much including the United States, are weighed down by the aftereffects of the 2008 financial crisis; this has led to low investment returns. Meanwhile, emerging markets are in much better shape, so capital wants to go there."

News in Brief: Fed Gave Secret Bailout to Foreign Banks, and More ...
http://truthout.org/news-brief-fed-gave-secret-bailout-foreign-banks-and-more/1306520037
The Federal Reserve secretly doled out money totaling at least $30 million to three foreign banks at interest rates as low as 0.01 percent during the 2008 financial crisis; Reagan-appointed Federal District Court Judge James Cacheris ruled late Thursday that corporations have a right to contribute money directly to political candidates; tribal leaders in Yemen warn of a civil war in President Ali Abdullah Saleh doesn't step down, as government war planes are reported bombing fighters linked to a prominent tribal leader; Google Inc. and two of its executives are being sued by the Internet giants eBay and PayPal for stealing trade secrets about mobile payment systems.

Welcome to the Violent World of Mr. Hopey Changey
http://www.truth-out.org/welcome-violent-world-mr-hopey-changey/1306433725
John Pilger, Truthout: "A new imperial phase is unfolding in direct response to the Arab uprising that began in January and has shocked Washington and Europe, causing an Eden-style panic. The loss of the Egyptian tyrant Mubarak was grievous, though not irretrievable; an American-backed counterrevolution is under way as the military regime in Cairo is seduced with new bribes and power shifting from the street to political groups that did not initiate the revolution. The Western aim, as ever, is to stop authentic democracy and reclaim control. Libya is the immediate opportunity. The NATO attack on Libya, with the UN Security Council assigned to mandate a bogus 'no fly zone' to 'protect civilians,' is strikingly similar to the final destruction of Yugoslavia in 1999. There was no UN cover for the bombing of Serbia and the 'rescue' of Kosovo, yet the propaganda echoes today."

Fixing the FCC, America's Broken Regulator
http://www.truth-out.org/fixing-fcc-americas-broken-regulator/1306505275
Emily Badger, Miller-McCune: "FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker announced earlier this month that she's leaving the agency for a job as the senior vice president of government affairs for Comcast-NBC Universal. The decision wasn't particularly surprising or even unusual. Public servants exit government all the time for K Street suites where their expertise is more profitable. Baker's timing, however, caused an uproar: In January, she voted to approve the merger of Comcast and NBC, creating the very company for which she'll be lobbying later this summer. Politicians and pundits denounced what looked like a particularly offensive case of a regulator bolting for the regulated. The agency's revolving-door problems in particular have grown more troublesome as the FCC has evolved from its roots in the 1930s as a regulator of federal radio spectrum."

Disabled Abandon Wheelchairs, Protest Medicaid Cuts
http://www.truthout.org/disabled-abandon-wheelchairs-protest-medicaid-cuts/1306521555
Rose Aguilar, Truthout: "When Sheela Gunn-Cushman decided to take part in a die-in at the California Republican Convention at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento in March, she didn't think it would change minds, but she believed that if attendees had to look into the eyes of people with disabilities, they might think twice about pushing for and supporting continued budget cuts. Shortly after arriving, Gunn-Cushman and several other members of Communities United in Defense of Olmstead (CUIDO) got out of their wheelchairs, made their way to the ground of the hotel lobby and quietly revealed signs saying, 'Our lives are precious,' 'Close corporate tax loopholes,' and 'Tax oil.' As this 'Die In' video taken by E+ Productions shows, no one could have predicted what came next."

David Sirota | Time to Crackdown on Child-Focused Ads
http://truth-out.org/time-crackdown-child-focused-ads/1306503495
David Sirota, Truthout: "Is Snoop Dogg the new Joe Camel? Is Ronald McDonald? During the last few weeks, these questions came to the forefront in a serendipitous series of jeremiads. First, critics accused Snoop of helping Colt 45 market a soda-esque alcohol drink to his underage fans. Then, Ronald was attacked in newspaper ads by health-care experts who demanded McDonald's stop using the clown to push unhealthy foods on kids. Whether or not this makes the rapper, the clown or the social network synonymous with Joe Camel, it's good news that more Americans are again demanding scrutiny of advertisers that try to take advantage of children."

In the Battle of the Budget, a Fog of Words
http://www.truth-out.org/battle-budget-fog-words/1306429453
Adam Bessie, Truthout: "Last year, socialism lost to austerity in the polls - that is, in Merriam-Webster's Top Ten Words of the Year. The problem with austerity, however, is that it requires a trip to the dictionary. While it makes the speaker sound knowledgeable, it also makes him sound just a little bit elitist - or worse, British. And when one is trying to dismantle the welfare state, it's bad to sound as if you come from a nation with socialized medicine. Thus, in 2011, the new conservative buzz phrase is far more relatable, far less ostentatious, and much more American-sounding. It is unlikely to ever make Webster's top ten of any year, nor will it send anyone to a dictionary."

The Underclass Won't Wait to Join Obama's "Everybody"
http://www.truth-out.org/underclass-wont-wait-join-obamas-everybody/1306424307
Joseph Natoli, Truthout: "I call him Class Warrior. He stands in front of me at a Circle K station. He is an outsider, excluded from the winnings market free play has placed in the coffers of wealthy insiders. He doesn't look like he's thriving in our capitalist environment. Everyone in Tucson who looks Mexican, as this young man does, is now suspected of being illegal and must show proof to the contrary. It may be that now the greatest transgressive spirit hangs on the identity of Mexicans, of Chicanos, who are all under suspicion in Arizona's capitalist environment. I expect anger and here it is, standing right in front of me."

Immigration for Third Graders
http://www.truth-out.org/immigration-third-graders/1306425344
Amy McMullen, Truthout: "I recently came across an article that brought attention to a particularly troublesome bit of curriculum being employed by an elementary school in Duluth, Georgia. When third-grade students brought home an assignment that dealt explicitly with the subject of immigration in this country, not surprisingly some parents were both alarmed and offended by the content. The students were asked to read a story called 'What is an Illegal Alien?' and then answer questions at the end. The story was both an overly simplistic and one-sided view of the complex subject of undocumented immigration in this country. But the quiz following was even more disturbing."
