Federal Market Opinions: Small Businesses and Politics

In theory, all politicians want small businesses to participate in the federal marketplace. But for practical reasons, their desire is general, not specific. Politicians can't really help a small business obtain a contract. There are exceptions and you've read about some of them in the Washington Post or your local paper. The exceptions often include a hefty campaign contribution and the whiff of corruption. There are just too many small businesses knocking at the door and, if elected officials did help, they would pretty quickly run into a roadblock; purchasing decisions are supposed to be made by agency personnel according to federal rules governing competition.

So, small businesses have to sell to the guy in the agency who wants to buy 10 million paperclips or to build a road in Ohio, not politicians.
