Hi, Carol. I hope the Oracle magazine you loaned me made it's way back to
you via campus mail. It was helpful, though I am still unclear how the
Oracle Web Interface compares to Scopus'. At any rate, we are purchasing
the Scopus Web interface for now which should buy us some time to
investigate Oracle's offering down the road.
It looks as though we will have a signed purchase agreement with Scopus by
the end of the week. This means that we are getting significantly closer
to actually being ready to implement something here, which in turn means we
are getting closer to needing some assistance from the ASD-DS group.
Briefly, here is a shopping list of the types of assistance I think we will
need to arrange:
-Initial clean-up of the database to remove old evaluation "crud"
-Assistance during clean install of purchased Scopus software by vendor
-Assistance with data migration from legacy system to Scopus/Oracle
-Creation of a time-out mechanism at Oracle level for users inactive for
over 2 hours (this would help us stay in compliance with 75 concurrent
users)
-Assistance with data model modifications once we get into custom Scopus
development
-Assistance establishing automated way to load data warehouse data into
Scopus database
-Ongoing database maintenance in the form of optimizations, backups,
restores, etc.
I have already had a brief email conversation with Roger and Peter Kelley
regarding the operations maintenance of the server itself. Currently the
server resides in the basement of E40 and is operated by the Athena
operations folks, even though it is not technically an Athena server. I
first contacted Roger because I was unclear as to where this server best
belonged. He suggested it might best be located in Peter Kelley's area
down in W91. The mail I received from Peter regarding this follows. Since
we will be needing both system maintenance and database maintenance
services, do you have a preference as to whether the server continues to
reside with Athena or moves to the Administrative Server Services Team?

Barbara,
Just to follow-up on Roger email. The Administrative Server Services Team
does this sort of computer facilities management. Basically, our services
are 1) space, 2) operator support (backup, offsite, machine monitoring,
etc.), and 3) system administration. Our specialities include rapid
response to critical problems and 24-hour monitoring of equipment. The W91
facility is a 24-hour shop M-F, with 8-hour shifts on weekends.
You can browse our web page for more detail and visit the 'Services
provided by ASST' part to see a more complete outline of the actual
services.
We also work very closely with the Database Services Team on all service
activities. If it's easier to work through one interface for all issues,
we can provide the behind scenes coordination as well.
