Hi Dan,

I'm currently trying to become one of those.

You can certify for Application-Consultant(hope it's the right translation
only got it in german) or Technical-Consultant. 
It can be done in a 4 weeks course or you can
have the courses over a longer period.
The certification is reached through a test at the end.

If you need further information mail me or try to contact
SAP, they got a department for that and they will give you 
stuff to read about.
