My consultancy company has just completed it's third successful Disaster
Recovery Planning project for customers with SAP systems. Platforms were
SUN and IBM RS6000, including high-availability clusters, interfaces to EDI
and the like and full wide-area connectivity.

For one customer, the project included sourcing a 3rd party disaster
recovery service provider to back up the 5 machines in the cluster. For the
other two, the customers have dedicated off-site machines that work as
development boxes unless they are required for a DR.

In each case we documented the entire recovery procedures from loading
operating systems, through restoring SAP and Oracle executables, data files
and redo logs, then on to reconfiguring networks and recovering interface
connectivity.

We have now successfully tested each customer's recovery plan 3 times, the
final test requiring a shutdown of production systems to enable a
comprehensive test of the backup service.

Any SAP customers that do not currently have a disaster recovery provision
should consider giving us a call. We can advise on the most cost-effective
methods of implementation and, if necessary, can manage and resource the
project from end to end. References available on request.
