here are two rules that have proven to be golden for me:

a) if ever possible: do not modify. Modifications (especially ones made my
some external freaks) are the worst nightmare when upgrading. We have a
pretty clean system and going from 3.0F to 4.0B was "a walk in the park" -
other systems we have are so modified they cannot be upgraded any more!!!

b) use the tools available to provide end-user reports (80% of requirements
DO NOT require ABAP if users agree that the content is important not the
format - check the simplification group web-site for an excellent reporting
overview)
