You can go the way of clustering, with tools from IBM or others.

A far better solution is an AS/400.
I ´n working as a basisconsultant and backup, online- reliabe everyday. On the
AS/400 this way of backup is called 'save while active'. Depending on the size
and nr of users  you need a couple of minutes to reach a checkpoint. During
this
reach checkpoint process R/3 is disconnected from the database. This process
takes on daily base a bout 10 to 30 minutes.After the 10 to 30 minutes R/3
connects to the database again and is up and running but ...

The backup media still contains a reliable backup, that can be restored
without
the need of so called re-do files (on AS/400 called journal receivers).

When you are looking for reliability, scalability and availibility the
AS/400 is
far better than any other platform, even basisconsultants from SAP in the
Netherlands do agree.
