RATIONALE: comp.soft-sys.business.sap

SAP is the world's leading provider of client/server business
application solutions. More than 6000 major companies in over
50 countries have chosen SAP R/3 client/server and R/2 mainframe
business applications to manage comprehensive functions essential
to their operations. Commanding a 31% share of the worldwide
cleint/server enterprise application software market, SAP is the
number one vendor of standard business application software and is
the fifth largest independent software supplier in the world.

With such a large user base, and with the complexity inherent in
such a diverse and powerful software package, a newsgroup is an
ideal way for SAP users to "network with peers" to keep informed and
solve problems.

A search of existing USENET newsgroups on August 9, 1996 identified
one newsgroup on SAP in the German "de" hierarchy: de.alt.comp.sap.
No English language or "Big 8" hierarchy newsgroups specific to SAP
were located. One newsgroup could be located that related somewhat to
the proposed topic but this was much more broad in focus:
comp.client-server. A review of postings to the comp.client-server
newsgroup revealed it covers a wide range of software packages and
not usually SAP.

Since 1995, a mailing list dedicated to SAP R/3 issues has been
in existence: SAP-R3-L (subscribe by sending an e-mail message
to LISTSERV@MITVMA.MIT.EDU with "SUBSCRIBE SAP-R3-L {full name}"
in the body of the message). We found a large readership and high
traffic on this mailing list: approximately 2300 subscribers, and
traffic that averages 50 messages per day though it commonly reaches
the 60 messages per day maximum. (Data obtained from list owner
D.J. Adams.)
