Not being a programmer myself I can only offer a few thoughts on that
topic, but I can address entering the world of SAP.

There exists a very large tome out there on the topic of ABAP/4
programming. I've seen it in bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders.
I have no idea if it is any good.

SAP has begun to offer their certification courses to non-partnered
consultants. You should visit/contact your local SAP office to find out a
class schedule. Next to actual project experience, this is the best place
to start on the SAP road.

I'd also recommend checking out the web site that Allen Davis & Associates
maintains. (I don't work with/ for them and don't know the address). On a
weekly basis an article about the SAP marketplace is posted and archived.
Some of the past articles have dealt with tips for entering the world of SAP.
