SD - List Display variant for Delivery Due List

I have a client requirement to be able to display the Delivery Due list
with the material number showing so that the proper deliveries can
be selected by the actual materials being shipped.
I can create a new Display variant without any trouble but I need to
find a way to have MATNR (material number) as one of the field
selection options available for the Display variant. Do I have to
modify or include this field in one of the T180 tables to be able to
select it? Is there another way to do this? Is there another IMG
setting to include that field in the selection list of fields for the
List
Display?
This is in version 3.1H and I am using transaction VOL1 to create
the new display variant. I did find the transaction code VXKP to
modify the program for field includes but I can not seem to find a
way to get external fields into the right table (I think T180P?)
without manually modifying the existing table through the DDIC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can not believe this is
an isolated incident. There are many applications that this would
help for going forward.
