HR Function/User Exits

Hello.
We are implementing Sap HR 4.0B. I am trying to modify an HR Function
Exit (MO PBEN0008 Calculation of Benefits) so that we can perform our
own benefit calculations etc (our benefits cafeteria style plan is
non-traditional in it's distribution of credits etc.)
Do I understand correctly that I am to modify the include that is called
in the program to send out the info that I want in the IMPORTING command
and then perform the calculations in the include and then bring back the
info in the EXPORTING command?
I am an ABAP/HR programmer new to user exits. Any advice/information
that you can
offer on the subject would help.
