Sorting Items on a Purchase Order

I am an end user on SAP R/3, 4.6c.
I create purchase orders by importing purchase requisitions.
I would like to be able to _permanently_ sort a purchase
order by material code before saving the purchase order
and printing it.
I am aware that I can click on the Material column and thus
sort it that way --but it is not permanent! Once the P.O. is
saved, it reverts back to the original order in which purchase
requisitions were imported into the P.O. Overwriting line
item numbers also does not work...
