Your Ontape archive second tape may be no good if it was a used tape.
That is what we found out the hard way. We are running SAP R3 22C
Informix on a HP running HP-UX.
We installed 22C eariler in the year and began backing up our system with
the Informix utility Ontape. The Ontape utility was SAP's suggestion.
During the last weekend in May 95, we had to expand the size of the root
directory. In the process we ended up having to restore the SAP system
from the Ontape archive. We were surprised to find out that the restore
was canceling at the beginning of the second tape. We found out that
the backup did not work correctly because the tapes were prevoiusly used
as Informix log tapes. The archives completed normally. There were no
error messages.
We passed the problem on to the SAP hotline. Several times we have
suggested to SAP (through our salesman and hotline management) that
they inform their customers that they may not have a valid backup.
That was about two months ago.
I wish that someone had told me that the backups might not be any good.
Sincerely,
Dennis J. Kaminski
