SAP Functionality?

The company I work for is considering SAP as its solution to their MRP and
financial applications, however, there is another side to the business that
deals with geneologies. Can SAP (i.e. ABAP) be used to traverse a tree
structure up to 256 levels deep? In other words, can you write recursive
subroutines using the ABAP language and how many levels can be "pushed"?
