Normally companies uses one (central) database server and one or more
separate application servers around it. These computers are all located at
the site with the highest number of users. A Wide Area Network provides
access from the other sides to the application and database servers. The
amount of traffic between presentation server (PCs at the LANs) and the
application server(s) is not shocking. The traffic between application and
database server is much more.
