Since you do not tell, what Release of SAP runs on the mainframe, I'll
describe some ways. My knowledge results from running OS/2 and 4.3J.
With 5.0 it may be possible to use RFCs, 4.3 only has CPI-C.

There is a SAP-handbook called =BBCommunication=AB. With release 4.3J it
describes CPI-C. This works pretty well, but RFCs are simpler to use
if the interface to the functions is good by design.

On the mainframe it works with SNA (IBM); I don't know anything about
BS2000. There is a good configuration-example in the SAP
documentation. Our release of SNA is about two years old, so I think
you don't need to upgrade here.
The PC runs OS/2 (2.11) with the Communication Manager (and
SAP-SNA-GW). SAP delivered the CUA-Interface with some programming
libraries for CPI-C. Today I think you will use the SAP R/3-Gui and
the SNA-Gateway. On this CD the RFC-library for all supported
Frontend-plattforms are included.
Since APPC is protocol independent it may be possible to use TCP/IP on
the host, but this is not required.
