2. SAP AG corporation

What is SAP?
SAP stands for Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung,
which freely translates into Systems, Applications, and Products in
Data Processing. SAP is a collection of software for nearly all
business applications in middle and large sized companies.
SAP AG corporation was founded in 1972 and is today one of the most
important software companies in the world.

SAP on Internet
SAP has the domain 'sap-ag.de'.
There's a private SAP communication net, which is not freely accessible
through the internet.
SAP sees the World Wide Web as a Electronic Marketplace and as a place
to go for business solutions. The WWW addresses can be found at the
section about network resrouces and the WWW.
EMail
SAP has their own mail gateway called sap-ag.de.
For general marketing requests ( promotional items etc ) contact the
infoline.
Individual SAP employees can be reached as
FirstName.LastName@sap-ag.de. At SAP AG the R/3 SAP office is used as

What product groups does SAP distribute?

How does SAP provide support?
OSS (Online Service System)
SAP provides OSS, a system where you can ask your questions online,
receive answers and can read answers to common problems.
There is a R/3 based Service System for R/3 customers, called R/3
Online Service System (OSS) and an R/2 based Service System for the R/2
customers called R/2 OSS.
OSS can be reached in one of the following ways:
o The OSS can't be reached via the Internet, but through a
TCP/IP-based virtual private network.
o Two german providers (XLINK at Karlsruhe and EUnet at Dortmund)
maintain an private SAP communication net. One can buy a
connection for about 1000,- DM once, 100,- DM per month and 0,0052
DM per kB data (there was a time 1 dollar costs 1.50 DM). [If you
have questions to R/3 support VPN at EUnet, send mail to

o Use a direct ISDN link.
o Use a X.25 connection.
o R/2 OSS and R/3 OSS can now be also accessed through Compuserve

What is SAP R/2?
SAP R/2 was the first compact software package for the whole spectrum
of business applications from the SAP corporation.

4. SAP R/3

What is SAP R/3?
SAP R/3 is the continuation of R/2 on client/server and distributed
open systems.

What platforms run SAP R/3?
SAP R/3 was designed for open systems, e.g. Unix.
SAP R/3 is now based on various hardware and software architectures, it
runs on most flavors of UNIX, on Windows NT and OS/400. Even
experimental versions on mainframes (open MVS) exist. It runs on
uni-processors, it scales very well on SMP systems and also on MPP
architectures.
R/3 runs on a variety of databases: Oracle, Informix Online, ADABAS-D,
DB2 for UNIX, DB2/400, Microsoft SQL Server 6 and on an experimental
version on DB2 for MVS.
All databases have their features and it is easy to find a database
which fits to your corporate IS infrastructure. Ask the database vendor
for the details.

ASUG
Thanx to Gordon Sloat for the following information:
ASUG is the American Sap User Group (ASUG).
Within ASUG, there are about a dozen Focus Groups organized by
function: SD, MM, Basis, EDI, etc. There also are some industry groups:
Chemicals, Consumer Goods, etc. Some of the groups are more active then
others. Some lean toward R/2; others toward R/3. The make up of the
Focus Groups is constantly changing. To participate, your company must
be an SAP customer and must join ASUG. Corporate membership costs $600
per year. Once your company is an ASUG member, any of your employees
are welcome to participate in any of the Focus Groups that interest
them.
The Compuserve ASUG Forum is a private forum run by ASUG and SAP. You
must be an ASUG member and be authorized by both SAP and Compuserve to
get access to the Forum. You can not use an existing Compuserve
account. You must order the start up kits from ASUG. Kits ordered from
Compuserve will not work! The start-up kits cost about $40 each.
Compuserve accounts cost a minimum of $10 per month. You can order as
many ASUG kits as you want. This procedure is a bit restrictive and
limits discussion on the forum, but SAP and Compuserve insists on it.
To get information about joining ASUG or to order Compuserve start up
kits, call the ASUG offices in Chicago. Kim Baker is Membership
Coordinator for ASUG. She can be reached at (312)-321-5142 or

Chairperson for ASUG. Sorry, but I don't have his number.

There is a private forum sponsored by ASUG (America's SAP User's
Group). You need to be an employee of a company that is using SAP and
you need to be a member of the above group.
Beside ASUG topics there are technical discussions, mostly about
installation and upgrade issues.
